Warning! Spoilers ahead for Detective Comics #1026

Waylon Jones was born with a rare birth defect that gave him his crocodile-like skin and appearance that led him to him becoming a sideshow wrestler and later criminal. As a result of his violent and criminal tendencies, Croc soon became a part of Batman’s rogues gallery in Gotham City, and also became a member of the Suicide Squad for a while. Most recently, he had been running the hotel that was formally owned by Tusk in the secret part of Gotham known as Monster Town. However, it’s since been destroyed as a result of Joker’s assault on Gotham in Joker War. This has lead Killer Croc to take refuge back in the sewers, which is where Batam finds him in Detective Comics #1026, written by Peter J. Tomasi with art by Kenneth Rocafort.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

When Batman comes across Croc, he sees that he’s saved several Gothamites from the toxic chemicals in the water caused by Joker’s production of his new toxin. Together, they built a new Monster Town from which Killer Croc sits as their leader. Also, the chemicals themselves turned several into animal hybrid monsters just like Croc himself. Batman warns Croc that the chemicals will eventually kill all of them, but Croc doesn’t believe him. He orders his new subjects to kill Batman, but ends up calling them off when Batman gets the upper hand. Instead, Croc strikes a deal with Batman: a one-on-one fight. If Croc wins, Batman leaves. If Batman wins, Croc and his people will leave with the Dark Knight. Due to Batman being Batman, he wins and Croc remarkably honors their deal.

Once everyone is moved out of the toxic sewers and kept in cells until a treatment is administered, Batman and Croc actually have a really endearing heart to heart. Croc shared how much a struggle it is for him to find normalcy. Batman actually gives Waylon some encouragement, urging him to not give into his darkness, and Croc thanks him for the advice and for also using his real name as well.

As this issue perfectly shows, Waylon Jones isn’t the savage animal he appears to be, and he’s actually a pretty honorable individual. Ultimately, he’s just trying to be left alone so he can live as normal life as he can. That doesn’t mean one should mess with him however. Killer Croc has plenty of experience ripping people that bother him or that he just doesn’t to shreds thanks to his genetic mutations, meaning Batman probably still needs to keep an eye on him.
