According to The Batman‘s official cast list, Peter Sarsgaard is NOT playing Harvey Dent aka. Two-Face in the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie. The actor officially joined the project in an unnamed role last month, with outlets like THR reporting he would be playing a district attorney – something that immediately fueled speculation he’d been cast as Gotham City’s most infamous D.A., Mr. Dent.

Launched by Man of Steel in 2013, the DCEU (not the official name) introduced Ben Affleck as Batman in 2016’s crossover, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Oscar-winner would go on to reprise the role two more times (first during Suicide Squad‘s post-credits scene, then in Justice League) and had originally planned to write, direct, and star in a solo movie of his own. However, that all changed in the aftermath of Batman V Superman‘s polarizing reception and Justice League‘s subsequent reshoots/release, which resulted in Affleck stepping away from the franchise altogether. Instead, Robert Pattinson is playing a relatively younger version of Bruce Wayne in The Batman, with Matt Reeves writing and directing.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Reeves took to Twitter yesterday to confirm The Batman has now officially started filming. In reality, of course, production has been underway for a few weeks, as evidenced by the various set photos that’ve leaked online That aside, Warner Bros. released an official cast list for The Batman in conjunction with Reeves’ announcement (via Business Wire), confirming Sarsgaard is playing Gotham D.A. Gil Colson in the film.

Although it’s certainly possible “Gil Colson” is a fake character and Sarsgaard is really playing Harvey Dent, that seems unlikely for the moment. The Batman cast list lines up with everything that’s been reported so far, including Zoë Kravitz playing Catwoman, Paul Dano playing The Riddler, and Colin Farrell costarring as The Penguin. In other words, there doesn’t appear to be any benefit to hiding the fact Two-Face is in this movie, considering how many other Batman rogues have already been confirmed. That said, it’s possible “Gil Colson” is basically a version of the Harvey Dent character who’s been given a different name, similar to how Dano is playing Edward Nashton, not Nygma (which is traditionally The Riddler’s real last name). Alternatively, Mr. Colson could turn out to be the unlucky guy who held the position of Gotham’s D.A. before Dent made his way up the ranks.

Moving on, The Batman cast list also confirms Jeffrey Wright is the new James Gordon, John Turturro is playing mob boss Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis will bring Alfred to life, and Jayme Lawson’s “mystery” role is actually that of Gotham City mayoral candidate Bella Reál. It’s worth noting the list doesn’t say if Gordon is the GCPD’s commissioner when the movie begins or not, supporting recent reports that Wright’s Gordon will start out being a regular Gotham cop in the DCEU. If so, it’s possible The Batman will explore how he achieved that rank in the first place (though, hopefully, in a fashion that’s not too similar to the character’s arc from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight).
