Warning! Spoilers for Batman #93 below.

The Batman villain the Designer has finally been unmasked. In the latest issue of James Tynion IV’s Batman run, Bruce comes face-to-face with the mysterious figure and when he finally unmasks him, Batman learns the shocking truth: the Joker’s been behind the Designer this entire time.

Ahead of the ‘Joker War,’ the Designer’s arc concludes with the shocking revelation about his true identity. The masked villain had debuted as one of Gotham’s heard-but-not-seen legends of the criminal underworld. He asked the top criminals, Catwoman, Penguin, Joker, and Riddler, to help him overtake the city, offering to split profits from their escapades. The agreement was busted when the Joker made a joke that didn’t sit wisely with the Designer. He was seemingly killed by the Clown Prince of Crime (and his body burned), which made it even more surprising when the Designer returned years later in an effort to get revenge while acting as a new thorn in the side of Batman.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Batman #94 by Tynion IV, Guillem March, Javier Fernandez, David Baron, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles, Batman’s confrontation with the Designer begins with the Caped Crusader spelling out the villain’s plans in front of him. Batman then reveals that he figured out the Designer’s plan and how his bank accounts have been hacked. While engaged in a sword fight, he tells the Designer he underestimated Gotham City and the Joker while removing his mask to reveal a burned corpse.

Batman knows Joker was controlling the villain and asks him what he’s trying to prove. As Joker tells Bruce he’s about to break Catwoman, Deathstroke shows up and thursts his sword on Batman’s leg. With Punchline knocking out Catwoman, Joker gets the call that his plan was a success and he managed to transfer “one hundred billion dollars” from Wayne Enterprises to his own bank account.

The Joker’s plan to get Bruce’s money and take aim at those closest to him was a success. At the end of the issue, it’s clear he’s in the driver’s seat ahead of his war against Batman and Gotham. Using the Designer’s corpse as one of his pawns was sinister. The legendary villain was literally being controlled by the Joker the entire time. Whatever’s coming up next for Batman and his Bat-Family, the ‘Joker War’ is going to be one of the toughest battles he’s ever been a part of. The Joker’s got money, power, and now he’s coming full-force after Batman.
