Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder explained in a live stream commentary how the film’s villain Doomsday evolved into a more comic book accurate representation of the character. Batman v Superman, which grossed a whopping $873 million at the worldwide box office, pitted beloved characters Batman and Superman against one another in show-stopping fashion.

Batman v Superman wasn’t a critical success, coming in at a mere 28 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. However, the film fared better with moviegoing audiences coming it at a respectable 62 percent. Following its theatrical release, Snyder released an extended director’s cut of the film entitled the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition in an assumed attempt to win over those who weren’t pleased with the theatrical release. The new cut was longer, including brand new, never before seen footage that fleshed out Batman and Superman’s respective stories as they begin to form their conflict with one another.

In honor of the four-year anniversary of Batman v Superman’s theatrical release, Snyder hosted a live rewatch of the film offering his own commentary. Snyder explained how Doomsday, one of the film’s villains, evolved into a more comic book accurate interpretation of the character. In his commentary, Snyder states that the character’s bone growths are meant to evolve him to make him look like the classic comic book iteration that fans have come to know and love.

Snyder’s commentary of the extended cut was full of new tidbits and behind the scenes information. For example, the director revealed that Wonder Woman leads the Batman v Superman trinity because she’s far more experienced than both Batman and Superman and that he didn’t entirely know what was going on in the caped crusader’s Knightmare sequence either. The director’s watch party on Vero actually crashed the site and had to move to YouTube in order to accommodate all the web traffic for the stream. Snyder has used Vero on several occasions to showcase behind the scenes footage and stills from the making of the film in addition to teases of his full version of Justice League, called the Snyder Cut, in order to pique interest.

Watching a director such as Snyder give detailed commentary of one of his films is always a delight, particularly because fans have been rallying to see his full cut of Justice League. Fans were disappointed with his take on Doomsday despite Snyder’s efforts to deliver a comic book accurate version of the character. The villain was admittedly one of the weakest parts of the film, a CGI creation that wasn’t very convincing or visually appealing and that also lacked menace. However, hearing tidbits such as this should make fans wonder what his future of the DCEU would’ve been like considering he seems to have had particular story ideas and character arcs/reveals well planned out if he was given the chance to move forward. Though it’s disappointing his ideas won’t be able to come to fruition, fans can still appreciate and revisit his work on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as they continue to yearn for his version of Justice League.
