A new Batman video compiles 12 Joker laughs, including those by Barry Keoghan and Mark Hamill. Joker became the arch-nemesis of Batman first in the pages of DC Comics and later on TV’s 1960s Batman show with Cesar Romero as the Clown Prince of Crime. But the character didn’t become a true cultural phenomenon until Batman went to the movies in 1989.

Jack Nicholson of course took on the role of Joker in Tim Burton’s blockbuster 1989 Batman film. Later on, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto would tackle the role in Batman live-action movies, with Joaquin Phoenix taking over in the standalone solo film Joker. Most recently, the aforementioned Keoghan played Joker the Arkham Asylum inmate in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Of course there have also been many small-screen, animated and video game Jokers over the years. Most famously, the aforementioned Hamill played Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and several other animated shows taking place in the DC universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Of course whether the performance is given in live-action, animation or anywhere else, a key factor for any Joker actor is their Joker laugh. Given the array of different actors who’ve played Joker over the years, it’s no surprise that Joker laughs range all over the place too, going from the truly maniacal to the menacingly subdued. Now fans can sample 12 of the most memorable Joker laughs in a new video from @batmanshiII on Twitter and decide for themselves which actor gave the best interpretation. In order the new clip features Hamill, Romero, Nicholson, two samples of Ledger, John DiMaggio in Batman: Under the Red Hood, Jeff Bennett in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Kevin Michael Richardson in the animated The Batman, two examples of Phoenix, Cameron Monaghan on the series Gotham, Leto, Troy Baker in the video game Batman: Arkham Origins and finally Keoghan. The animated and video game laughs indeed seem to be the most over-the-top, which makes sense as the actors in question are trying to convey a lot through voice. On the flip side, the most subdued of the laughs clearly comes from Leto in the Knightmare epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is obviously in keeping with that sequence’s generally somber tone.

Indeed it’s interesting to look at these different Joker performances together and think about the various choices each actor made in trying to nail one of the most iconic of all movie laughs. Obviously the laugh alone isn’t the entire performance, but it is a big part of bringing the Joker to life. Clearly each performer put a lot of thought into how hard they would go in conveying the biggest Batman villain’s maniacal personality through his memorably unhinged cackling.
