Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman #121

The latest upgrade Batman has made to his Batsuit includes a very impressive and unexpected weapon. While the Dark Knight typically uses darkness and the shadows to his advantage, neither is very effective against his newest foe Abyss who’s managed to blind Batman using darkness itself. As such, Bruce Wayne is motivated to upgrade his suit with the perfect (and surprising) countermeasures in the newest issue of Batman.

In previous issues of the series from Joshua Williamson, Jorge Molina, and Mikel Janín, Batman has come to the country of Badhnisia to investigate reports that his old team Batman Incorporated murdered an individual known as Abyss, a dark vigilante created by Lex Luthor, who had been inspired by Batman Inc. to create his own vigilantes across the globe. However, the project got away from him and Abyss went rogue, motivating Lex to hire the original Batman Inc. to take Abyss out. While Batman Inc. pretended to join Abyss to kill Luthor (while also faking his death), it turns out that they were simply playing the long game and working undercover (as discovered by Batman). In reality, they have been investigating Luthor’s activities since Batman Inc. was first formed.

Despite being blinded by Abyss and his powers of darkness when they first crossed paths, Batman is determined to take out Abyss once and for all in the new Batman #121. As such, Batman hacks into Lex’s bat-themed battle suit to integrate its ability to counter Abyss’ powers into his own Batsuit. Lighting up the bat symbol on his chest, Batman upgrades his suit to wield the power of light, a rare occurrence for the vigilante commonly known as the Dark Knight.

Not only does Batman’s newly upgraded suit neutralize Abyss’ powers with what’s essentially a focused wave of light, it also restores the Caped Crusader’s eyesight as he takes down the vigilante who sought to model himself after Batman himself (albeit a much darker version). However, Batman confirms that Abyss has fallen too far into the darkness, using it as a crutch as he eventually became corrupted. While Luthor carries a large part of the blame for his experiments and rejection of Abyss, the rogue’s choices were still his own.

Regardless, light isn’t typically a tool used by Batman though it certainly comes in handy against Abyss and his darkness powers. While Abyss ends up destroying the upgrade during their brawl, it will be interesting to see if the ability ever comes back. It would certainly be a dynamic secret weapon if Batman were to have what’s essentially a miniaturized yet powerful bat-signal on his chest at all times, shining a light and exposing the darkness when needed in future issues from DC Comics.
