Battlefield 2042 will support a record-breaking number of players for the franchise, with 128 players on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. That said, those on last-gen consoles will be working with a scaled back version of Battlefield 2042 that will be more on par with the more recent entries in the series in terms of map and player scale.

There had been rumors of 128 players in Battlefield 2042 in the last few months, but it still left a lot of questions lingering, such as how DICE would build the maps to support this and how this might impact moment to moment to gameplay. Based on what has been revealed so far, it looks like Battlefield 2042 will indeed be bigger than any game in the series before it.

DICE confirmed during a press event for Battlefield 2042 that the game will support 128 players on both current-gen consoles and PC, which will allow for the biggest maps to date in the series. Sadly, last-gen consoles will not see these massive battles, as they’ll be stuck with 64 players still. To accommodate for better pacing of matches, the maps will also be condensed so there isn’t large amounts of dead space. EA and DICE plan to talk about plans for crossplay in Battlefield 2042 at a later date, but it seems likely there won’t be any cross-gen cross-play happening due to the drastic differences in player and map sizes.

Battlefield has historically been 64 players at most, but now 2042 is evolving the scale of the series in a massive way by doubling the player count. Not only is this just super cool because bigger is often seen as better when it comes to multiplayer player counts, but it opens up the possibilities for new gameplay options when things like huge maps give players more freedom to move around. This offers plenty of ways to flank enemies, and air vehicles will have room to actually navigate Battlefield 2042’s map, rather than just flying in a continuous circle.

The Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer already gives a good idea of the scope of this game – not just in player count, but in terms of the general level of action. With all those vehicles in play, all the different layers to the maps, and things like tornadoes that will cause even more chaos during matches, it’s clear DICE is doing a lot to be the most dominant shooter on the market this holiday season. It’s a very dynamic game and is upping the ante in ways almost no other AAA FPS franchise is attempting. Whether or not all of these new variables in Battlefield 2042 is enough to satisfy fans remains to be seen, but it’s looking like a strong start.

Battlefield 2042 will release on October 22, 2021 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
