WARNING: This article include spoilers from Batwoman season 3 episode 12, “We’re All Mad Here”

Thanks to a new BTS photo from Batwoman season 3, the Arrowverse has given a first proper look at the original Joker with a comic-accurate costume. The Arrowverse has a few shows that are getting ready to wrap for the season, with Batwoman being one of them. The season 3 of the Gotham City-centric drama has focused on Ryan Wilder and her team re-collecting the lost Batman trophies from some of his most famous villains. As Batwoman season 3 has seen villainous mantles picked up by Gotham citizens, the series has also created its own new Joker. Following the introduction of Ryan’s brother, Marquis Jet (Nick Creegan), he ended up taking on the role of Gotham’s new Clown Prince of Crime.

While Marquis has been filling the Joker position, his predecessor has only been touched upon a few times throughout Batwoman‘s run. Even though the Arrowverse has referenced a ton of famous Batman enemies, many of them are either missing or deceased, and in the case of the Joker, Batwoman season 1 established that at some point during Bruce Wayne’s time as a vigilante, the Dark Knight murdered his archnemesis. It has been widely speculated that Batman breaking his no-kill rule is what pushed him to abandon Gotham, as the Caped Crusader has been missing-in-action for over five years.

So, while Marquis holds the status as the present Joker, Batwoman season 3’s recent episode spotlighted the original one via a flashback. Episode 12, “We’re All Mad Here,” featured the moment when Marquis’ mind was damaged by the Joker during childhood. While fans only saw the classic villain from the back, Kendrick Jackson, who played the young Marquis, shares a BTS image on his Instagram of him and the uncredited actor who portrayed Joker in the episode. This is the first time fans got to both see – and hear – the Arrowverse’s Joker, despite it being only through flashbacks. What likely prevented Batwoman from ever using the character completely is due to Warner Bros.’ restrictions on DCTV, as the studio tends to reserve some of the bigger DC players exclusively for the live-action films, with Joker being one of them. Gotham had the opposite problem, in which the Batman prequel series could explore their take on the maniacal clown across five seasons through Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, with the latter ultimately taking on the role. However, Gotham couldn’t use the Joker name, and they had to do some tinkering with his final costume.

While Warner Bros.’ questionable DC restrictions will always be a mystery, it benefits the Arrowverse to do their own take on Joker. Even though he isn’t really a legacy title, making Marquis the new iteration allowed Batwoman season 3 to give its heroine a very personal villain. Not only does Ryan have to stop someone who essentially worships the Joker, but he is her own flesh-and-blood, a refreshing angle to the Bat-and-Joker dynamic. With only one episode remaining, it will be intriguing to see how the Batwoman season 3 finale wraps up the war between Ryan and her personal Joker.
