Sad news from The CW’s Batwoman, as a crew member was injured in a recent on set accident. Batwoman is the network’s newest Arrowverse show, joining current series The FlashLegends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. The Ruby Rose vehicle is currently on season 1, part way through a 22-episode run. Batwoman has also already received a season 2 order from The CW, as have the rest of the Arrowverse shows. Though Batwoman/Kate Kane didn’t star in her own show until this past fall, she made her Arrowverse debut in 2018’s Elseworlds crossover. There, other heroes traveled to Gotham City to seek Batwoman’s help.

Batwoman also played a key role in this season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event, which united characters from all 5 Arrowverse shows, as well as Black Lightning. In it, she was the Paragon of Courage and helped the other heroes to restore the multiverse. However, the move had unexpected consequences, allowing Kate to meet her twin sister’s doppelganger from another Earth. There were effects on other shows as well, most notably, the recently concluded flagship series Arrow. Its hero, Oliver Queen/the Green Arrow, sacrificed himself for the cause.

Per Vancouver Sun, the Batwoman set accident happened on March 11, shortly before the show stopped production due to the coronavirus. The incident involved a production assistant, Amanda Smith, who was injured when a telehandler bucket was lowered onto her. At the time, the PA was sitting underneath the Georgia Viaduct, with the sound of traffic drowning out the sound of the machine. As a result, Smith suffered spinal injuries requiring surgery.

Unfortunately, on set accidents happen all the time in Hollywood, most often to stunt performers. A few years ago, a stunt man was killed while working on the AMC series The Walking Dead. Similarly, a crew member was injured last year on the set of the recently delayed Bond film No Time to Die. However, even movie stars aren’t immune to these kinds of incidents. Maze Runner lead Dylan O’Brien was injured a few years ago, as was Tom Cruise while during a Mission: Impossible – Fallout stunt.

Set injuries and deaths are one of a number of problems occurring in Hollywood, but one of the most important to combat. Though the industry has come a long way, that is one area where it still has a lot of work to do. Hopefully, in the future, incidents like this one on Batwoman will become less common, as necessary safety protocols are put in place.
