Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batwoman season 2.

Batwoman’sHush story just wasted Batman’s best unused movie villain. Season 1 of the Arrowverse show introduced fans to Tommy Elliot, the villain known as Hush and the self-pronounced childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. It wasn’t long before the villain was sent to Arkham Asylum. He got out at the end of season 1 and it seemed like he would play a big role in Batwoman season 2, only for the titular heroine to dispatch him before the season 2 premiere was over.

Tommy Elliot received the greatest gift he could ask for in the season 1 finale of Batwoman. With the help of Alice, who was experienced in creating disguises that would literally change people’s faces, Tommy was finally able to transform from a Bruce Wayne wannabe into the billionaire playboy himself. The season 1 finale ended with Tommy smiling diabolically while examining his new face in the mirror, ready to take on Gotham City while in the guise of Bruce. And he was. In the season 2 premiere of Batwoman, called “What Happened to Kate Kane?”, Tommy galivanted throughout the city as the famous philanthropist, announcing his presence in a grandiose fashion.

Tommy popped into Wayne Enterprises, where he was let into the Batcave by Luke Fox under the presumption that he was the man’s long-time friend. Luke even entrusted “Bruce” with the kryptonite Kate Kane was tasked to destroy. Later, Tommy took up residence in Wayne Manor, enjoying the benefits of being someone he was not. For all intents and purposes, Tommy’s transformation was successful and whatever his plans were during his time impersonating Bruce were only just getting started. After all, Tommy knew Bruce’s secret identity.

With his newfound access to the Batcave and all of its gadgets and technology, Tommy could have lived out his dreams of becoming the Dark Knight. It’s what he’s always wanted and Tommy was a chaotic enough villain to wreak some fantastically entertaining havoc around Gotham for a while. Plus, he could have also caused a lot of damage to both Bruce and Batman’s reputations and it’s something that Batwoman could have greatly explored. However, Tommy’s run as Bruce/Batman came to a screeching halt after he crossed paths with Julia Pennyworth, who quickly deduced that Tommy’s Bruce was indeed a fraud. While Tommy attempted to obtain the Batsuit that was in newcomer Ryan Wilder’s possession, he was defeated and sent back to Arkham.

For a villain with so much potential, Tommy’s run as Bruce Wayne was far too short. Of course, it’s likely there was a lot more in store for him, but the plan probably changed after the story changed from Kate Kane to Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder. That said, Tommy could have still been worked into the story and it would have been fantastic had he been able to fool Luke, Mary, Julia, and Jacob for a little while longer. Having him around as Bruce for just one episode of Batwoman didn’t do Tommy’s arc any justice and it was a missed opportunity to finally implement one of Batman’s greatest villains. While there is still hope that Tommy will show back up at some point down the line, his time as Bruce Wayne is over and all the buildup towards this moment was unfortunately squandered.
