Discord lets users tweak the appearance of text messages by using the Markdown system for bold, italics, underlining, and more. Discord has been around since 2015, and much of its initial success can be credited to esports and PC gamers who used it to talk to their friends while playing online multiplayer games. Unlike other VoIP platforms like Skype, Discord doesn’t require users to make a call to talk to someone. Users can just enter a voice channel and start talking.

Since then, Discord has evolved from its gaming persona and is now used by individuals and organizations as a communications platform. Users can create public or private servers, with the latter being accessible only through an invite. Discord servers have multiple channels divided by topic or category to keep conversations organized. Many servers only use text to communicate, such as those created for work or education.

On Discord, users can either chat in channels or in DMs with their friends. Using plain text can be limiting, and sometimes users may need to emphasize text to make a point. Fortunately, Discord supports Markdown, which is a simple text-formatting language. With Markdown, Discord users can mark text as bold, italics, underlined, strikethrough, and even use a combination of these styles. On the desktop interface, all of this can be done quite easily by highlighting the text before sending it and choosing from the available Markdown options that appear. On the mobile app, users will need to use Markdown characters to format text.

How To Send Formatted Discord Messages

To italicize text, place an asterisk (*) at the beginning and end of the message. It should look like *this* when typed, and this when the message is sent. To mark text as bold on Discord, place two asterisks (**) at the beginning and end of the text. The message should look like **this** while typing, and like this when sent. To combine a bold and italics formatting style, add three asterisks (***) before and after the message. Prior to sending, the message should look like ***this***, and once sent, the Markdown language changes the text to this.

Text can also be formatted by underlining it or using the strikethrough style. To underline text on Discord, add an underscore (_) before and after the text. To add a strikethrough to text, add two tilde characters (~~) at the beginning and end of the text. Additionally, users can combine formatting styles by adding the characters for two or more styles before and after the text. While other messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram also support Markdown, the special characters used differ slightly from what is used on Discord.
