Below Deck: Why Fans Thought Captain Glenn Was Dating Deckhand Sydney

After season two of Below Deck Sailing Yacht came to an end, viewers started to think that Captain Glenn Shephard and deckhand Sydney Zaruba were an item. Glenn joined the Below Deck franchise in 2020 when he was introduced as the captain for the new series. He later returned for season two, along with a whole new interior and exterior crew, including deckhand Sydney. She worked closely with Jean-Luc Cerza-Lanaux and Gary King.

At the start of the season, Sydney had a short fling with first mate Gary during the crew’s first night off. The relationship went south after Gary admitted that he never really had feelings for Sydney. He was actually into Alli Dore a lot more. Sydney tried to have more than just a friendship with Gary, but he just wasn’t feeling it. Since the show, Sydney has moved on from Gary, thanks to an unexpected love interest.

When Sydney announced that she was dating a captain during the BDSY reunion, fans began to think that Captain Glenn was the person she was involved with. The speculation went further after Glenn shared a photo to his @bigsailboats Instagram of him and Sydney with the caption, “I guess the news is out.” Viewers immediately reacted. Some of them were happy about the alleged reunion. “This is so sweet,” a fan wrote in the comment section, adding sailboat and heart emojis. Another fan on Reddit wrote, “I’m beside myself I can’t even focus on work now.” There was even more excitement among fans when Sydney added an orange heart emoji underneath the jaw-dropping photo. After fans started wondering if Sydney and Glenn were a couple, the captain quickly adjusted his caption to make their relationship status clearer. “And the news is: Syd and I are great friends. And she’s dating a captain. A different Captain,” he wrote. Glenn, who was in a massive boat crash, was obviously playing with fans as they began to speculate that he was the captain Sydney revealed she was dating during the reunion special. He was joking the whole time, after realizing that fans thought his friendship with Sydney was more than just platonic. Glen even took the joke further by putting to rest any rumors of a relationship between him and Gary. “Ok, Just to clarify […] No, Gary and I are not dating. We are very close, but I can assure you it is purely platonic.“

Now that Glenn and Sydney have confirmed that they are strictly friends, viewers might see a return of the two friends on season three of Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Glenn has developed quite a close working relationship with several of the season two crew members. For this reason, it would be shocking if Sydney and the rest of the crew made a return.
