Get Lifted, John Legend’s production company, announced that they are in the early stages of developing a biopic based on the life of late comedian and actor Bernie Mac. Mac’s career started in comedy before landing his first acting role in 1992’s Mo’ Money. Mac continued playing small parts and even landing the recurring role of Uncle Bernie on Moesha. He began to receive major recognition after Spike Lee’s 2000 stand-up comedy documentary, The Original Kings of Comedy, which featured sets from Mac, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Steve Harvey. Mac passed away on August 9, 2008, following complications with pneumonia.

The news of the biopic was announced by Legend’s producing partner Mike Jackson (via THR) at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. He said, “We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story.” Jackson went on to explain that the project would be a film that highlights the life and career of Mac. Legend himself discussed the impact of The Bernie Mac Show, which was based on Mac’s real life, saying:

“It was beautifully done… His humor was always edgy but it always had so much heart to it at the same time. You could tell he was a family man. You could tell that he loved the people he was talking about.”

Get Lifted has had several successful projects that focus on celebrating underrepresented cultures in film and television, such as Rhythm + Flow, Jingle Jangle, and Underground. With Legend working alongside Mac prior to his death in 2008’s Soul Men and the clear respect he has for Mac, Get Lifted is the perfect company to adapt Mac’s life into a film. It’s too early to tell what events and projects the film will focus on, but with Bernie Mac‘s estate backing the project, fans can rest assured that his story is in good hands.
