Home Alone 3 trended on Twitter as users debated the top Christmas movies of all time and whether the third instalment in the Home Alone series deserves a spot. Home Alone 3 premiered in 1997 and was the first film in the Home Alone franchise to not feature Macaulay Culkin or any other previous cast members. The film follows eight-year-old Alex Pruitt (Alex D. Linz) as he defends his house against criminals while home sick from school. Also unlike the other Home Alone films, Home Alone 3 takes place after the holidays, rather than during them.

Home Alone 3 was far from the hit that the original 1990 Home Alone film was. The first Culkin-led film achieved what only a few holiday films have and became a true Christmas classic. Over three decades later, Home Alone is still viewed at Christmas time every year as families watch Kevin McCallister (Culkin) defend his home from burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) after being left behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation. Home Alone received more positive reception than either Home Alone 2 or Home Alone 3. However, many have differing opinions on where Home Alone 3 ranks, not only among its franchise, but among Christmas films in general.

Home Alone 3 began trending on Twitter as users debated the top Christmas films of all time. The debate began when Barstool Sports posted a list of the top 10 Christmas films of all time and included Home Alone 3 in it. Home Alone 3 came in at number 6, beating A Christmas Story, Miracle On 34th Street, Home Alone 2, and Bad Santa. Many users instantly took offense at Home Alone 3 being listed above several Christmas classics, some at it being included on the list at all. According to many responses, disrespecting Christmas films is a serious offense, and many were ready to defend their films to the death. Check out the original Tweet and hilarious responses below:

Needless to say, it became quite apparent that Home Alone 3 is a triggering topic for many. While many declared that Home Alone 3 nullified the entire list, others vehemently defended it as a Christmas film and as superior to Home Alone 1 and 2. Many users also bemoaned the fact that their favorite Christmas films, such as The Grinch, The Polar Express, and Santa Clause, did not even make the list at all. The entire trend revealed that individuals feel quite strongly about their Christmas movies and will not tolerate any of their choices being disrespected. Apparently, many classic Christmas film traditionalists especially will not stand for Home Alone 3 to be ranked above their favorites. Meanwhile, while those who like Home Alone 3 are far and few between, this group is wholly committed to their opinion.

Overall, the strong response to Home Alone 3‘s place on a list of best Christmas movies simply illustrates the role that such films play during the holidays. These aren’t merely films that individuals enjoy watching once a year, but are a deep-rooted tradition. When one considers that viewing these films might have been a yearly tradition since childhood for some, it is easier to understand why so many strong opinions exist. As for whether Home Alone 3 truly is a Christmas film, it simply depends on one’s unique perspective. The events of the film do not take place during Christmas, but the Home Alone franchise is so deeply entwined with Christmas that one cannot be blamed for associating the third film with the holiday, as well. There is no true winner to the debate as one can make any film a part of their sacred Christmas tradition, however, one may fear being mobbed if that sacred tradition is Home Alone 3.
