Demon Slayer offers some of the most striking images of manga heroes and monsters – both in its original manga artwork and its popular anime adaptation. The story, about a young boy, Tanjiro Kamado, who loses his entire family to a group of evil demons and joins a team of professional demon slayers to get revenge and find a cure for his now-demonic sister, struck a huge chord with manga fans everywhere.

Now, many of these manga fans have used the art of Demon Slayer as a springboard for their own fan art, creating depictions of the characters and world that even the original creators probably never dreamed of. Here are some of the best examples of how creative Demon Slayer fan art can become.

Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado

Every Demon Slayer fan is familiar with how series protagonist Tanjiro Kamado and his sister – the part-demon Nezuko – looks. But here, Deviant Art artist Ron-faure paints the two in a photo-realistic style using Adobe Photoshop CS6. Ron-faure makes sure to include the characters’ signature features, including Tanjiro’s trademark scar and Nezuko’s bamboo muzzle (which she must wear to ensure she never tastes human blood).

However, Ron-faure includes some wonderful distinctive details of his own, from the haunting way Nezuko’s hair flows to the mystical waves of energy encircling the brother and sister. Nice work!

Shinobu Kocho

Known as the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho is one of the Demon Slayer Corps’ “Pillars” – one of the most powerful members thanks to her Insect Breathing Style. Although she seems calm and friendly, Shinobu actually harbors a great deal of hatred toward the Demons for killing her sister Kanae Kocho.

Here, artist Rashedjrs depicts Shinobu in one of her calm and contemplative moments. Having her surrounded by butterflies offers a great visual representation of Shinobu’s Insect Breathing Style, while the purple lighting gives the character a somber look.

Nezuko

Nezuko is a popular Demon Slayer character for fan artists – but most artists prefer showing her in her tragic and dangerous demon form. Thailand artist chinchongcha chose to go a different way by portraying Nezuko as she was before her transformation – a sweet, gentle girl free of the internal struggle she’d have to endure as a half-demon. As Nezuko is freed of her transformation later in the storyline, this fan art also offers hope for what is yet to come.

Demon Slayer: The 9 Pillars

The nine Pillars (or Hashira) of the Demon Slayer Corps are renowned for their strength and skill – but rarely have they looked as majestic or heroic as they do in this group painting done by Seattle, Washington artist jiuge who spent a great deal of time putting an intricate amount of detail in the Pillars. Gyonmei Himejima appears remarkably pious with his prayer beads while Mitsuri Kanroji exudes the strength her usual anime form hides. Shinobu appears gentler in this depiction while Kyojuro Rengoku adopts an almost casual swing with his sword. Sanemi’s scars are apparent even from a distance and Giya, Muichiro, Tengen, and Obanal all exude the youth, flamboyance, danger, and skill of their characters.

Muzan Kibutsuji

Muzan Kibutsuji is a difficult character for many to get right. On one hand, he’s the original Demon and the most powerful of all the deadly creatures the Demon Slayers have to fight. On the other, his long hair and clothing choices often make fans compare him to Michael Jackson. Even so, fan artist AmarthGul manages to capture both Muzan’s androgynous look as well as his creepy dangerous nature in this eerie piece that draws you in and unnerves you at the same time.
