Romancing SaGa Re;universe brings together a diverse cast of heroes from across the SaGa franchise. With so many characters and Styles it can be hard to plan out how to train and build the right team. It can also involve quite a bit of luck, as this is one of Square Enix’s free-to-play gacha style games.

When browsing Styles, you may notice two names listed. This is mostly a remnant of Romancing SaGa 2, in which the story took place over generations and included multiple characters with the same combat role and fighting style. In Romancing SaGa Re;universe these separate characters are considered one in the same, sharing EXP and skills. In other cases, characters have civilian and hero identities, such as Red and his superhero alter ego Alkaiser.

Starting Party and Summoning in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe

When starting Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe, the main character Polka will be joined by four random party members. The primary way of getting more Styles and characters is via Summoning. Each Summon uses a themed banner with a different pool of heroes, cost, and possible discounts. Because this is a live service game, Square Enix may have special seasonal banners for only a limited amount of time; or even change which Styles are inside a given Summon banner. To start off your journey, you will receive some free currency like gems and tickets to redeem for Summoning.

The most consistent Summon is the Platinum Banner, which allows one free pull every day. Other spins cost 300 gems for one Style, and a bulk pull of ten Styles for 3000 gems that guarantees at least one S Style. Possible content inside may include:

Resetting data

Even after expending all of your free gems and tickets, you may be unhappy with your party makeup. In that case, your stats are not initially saved server-side. If you delete your local save or uninstall and reinstall the game you will be given the same amount of gems and tickets to reroll a whole new team.

Ideal Early Characters in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe

When building a party you will want to cover every damage type to exploit enemy weaknesses and avoid their resistances. Swords, Great Swords, and Axes deal slashing damage. Rapiers, Spears, and Bows deal piercing damage. Hammers, Martial Arts, Guns, and Staffs deal blunt damage; certain upgraded equipment may also have mixed damage. Most Staff users gain an assortment of magic spells, but even wielders of other weapons may learn some magic. Some spells deal damage, boost stats, or even heal.

Sword

Sword users tend to have a good balance of damage output and defense, either from a high endurance stat or being able to negate incoming damage. Julian and Albert are going to be among the best at this role, especially after inheriting skills from their other Styles. Urpina is less tanky but more than makes up for it with high damage. Gerard, Annie, and Sephira are also good substitutes. Also do not discredit Polka, as the main character he is very likely to have interesting seasonal Styles.

Great Sword

Great Sword users can still serve as tanks but tend to have even better damage than their normal sword wielders. Gustave and Final Emperor will both develop into absolute beasts. Katrina and Final Empress will have a bit less raw offense but may have faster BP gain and more survivability, respectively. Hector/Orion joins right after the intro tutorial and if you are pleased with him it would be good to obtain his other Styles.

Rapier

Rapier wielders tend to hit fast and are more likely to have some added status effects. Selma, Henri, Fake Robin, and Fatima (RS3) are all good choices. Presently, Monika Style SS is being given free for completing all of Story Quest 3-2.

Axe

Axe users tend to hit very hard and also often cripple the enemy. Aisha is great for debuffs, Ellen for raw damage. Sif is very durable and her Style S is currently being offered for free. Additionally, you will get a free Black/Herman Style S after beating Story Quest 1-2.

Spear

Spear users hit pretty quickly, but also may have access to area attacks or various buffs. Cordelia, Barbara, and Jeanne should be your top recruits. Keep an eye out for Mariah as she can cast healing spells. Laura and Thomas are also good back up starters, though they might not have as much longevity.

Martial Arts

Martial Artists hit extremely hard, though some of their skills may have high BP costs. Azami is pure destruction, while Cat can completely ruin the enemy’s damage output. Red/Alkaiser can easily turn into a near-invincible tank. Keep Leonid in mind if you fight enemies with Dark weakness. Johan and Liza (SF1) are both good backups.

Club

Club users are the most likely melee characters to also have a good grasp of magic, especially buffs and healing. Ginny and Will should be sought after first. As part of the game launch, Nora Style S, Flurry Style S, Mayorof Krylund Style A, and Sophia/Agatha Style SS are obtainable for free or after two or three hours of missions.

Bow

Bow attackers can often hit multiple times, and can likely strike a group or line of enemies. Claudia is a solid pick who has many advanced Styles. Labelle is also a good option as she will eventually gain debuffs. Liz/Robin Girl is excellent as she is a story character whose Styles you can unlock.

Gun

There aren’t a lot of Gun users in the default Summon banners, so don’t feel bad if you don’t acquire one. Still, you should be very pleased with Mei Ling or Emilia, the former offering more support and the latter raw damage. Also, if you happen to have access to a seasonal banner with T260G, try to roll for him.

Staff

Staff users are the most diverse, as their spells have different elemental attacks and effects. Undine has great Ice magic and can make a decent healer. Myriam is an explosive force with her Fire damage. Rouge deals Dark damage with some great side effects. Blue is a must-have for his powerful Light attacks. Last, Rocbouquet can easily shut down most foes.

With the random nature of Summons, it can be highly improbable to get a perfect team. Still, there are many options that can be very suitable. And you can always reset and try for new members until satisfied.
