Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn explains Kim’s finger guns in the season 5 finale. As a prequel to Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul has brought back many characters from the hit AMC series, including its titular lawyer, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), who permanently adopts the professional alias Saul Goodman at the end of the fourth season. Other returning characters include Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), and Hank Schrader (Dean Norris).

Although fans were delighted to see these familiar faces, Better Call Saul has introduced an array of new characters who have become just as highly regarded, such as Chuck McGill (Michael McKean), Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), Nacho Varga (Michael Mando), and Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton). One of the show’s most notable introductions has been Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), Jimmy’s close colleague and eventual wife. At the end of season 5, the two set their sights on sabotaging Howard for Jimmy’s share of the Sandpiper case settlement, and Kim makes a finger gun gesture that left many viewers scratching their heads.

Now, in an interview with The Daily BeastBetter Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn is sharing her interpretation of Kim’s infamous finger guns. Seehorn talks about how difficult the scene was to film, which was essentially a cat-and-mouse game between Kim and Jimmy, as she tests the limits of what he’s willing to do to achieve his desired ends. Though she was careful not to reveal too much, Seehorn did say that, in this scene, Kim is fighting back against those she feels are trying to make decisions for her. Read Seehorn’s explanation below:

Kim has also just come off the scene with Howard who’s told her, “I just want to let you know that Jimmy’s bad for you.” Everyone’s constantly having ideas about what Kim should be and what’s good for her and what’s not good for her. And then here’s the man that I love also telling me, “I think I’m bad for you.” Like she’s not a grown adult making her own choices, which is one of the constant themes that I have loved that they have given my character… I think there’s a little bit of her saying, “You think you know me? Everyone thinks they know me. Well, guess what you don’t know about me?” Is it true? I don’t know. Maybe it is true. Maybe you’re going to find out.

Seehorn’s explanation hints at the few different layers there are to Kim’s finger guns. On the surface, it indicates she is serious about her plans to sabotage Howard or do “Something Unforgivable,” as the episode’s title suggests. Her finger guns are also a reference to the season 4 finale in which Jimmy made a very similar gesture to Kim indicating that he was serious about practicing law under the alias Saul Goodman.

Just like when Jimmy made the gesture, Kim’s finger guns suggest she has officially broken bad and is past the point of redemption. As the two likely move forward with their plans to torpedo Howard in season 6, a few of Better Call Saul‘s biggest questions revolve around Kim’s fate. Even Seehorn doesn’t know if Kim lives or dies, so fans will just have to wait for the final season to find out her fate.
