Bob Odenkirk would love to return for a Better Call Saul spinoff film if the series follows in the footsteps of Breaking Bad’s El Camino. For five seasons, the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad prequel has followed Jimmy McGill’s transformation into his alter-ego, Saul Goodman, the attorney who would represent Walter White, a.k.a. Heisenberg. Better Call Saul season 6 season will see that journey come to a close.

As fans prepare to bid adieu to Odenkirk’s character, the door to the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul universe will presumably be left open. In 2013, Breaking Bad aired its season 4 finale, “Felina,” which sees Walt secure his family’s future, take out Uncle Jack, and free Jesse Pinkman, with the latter riding off into the night. In the years that followed, fans thought that their time with those characters was over. However, in 2019, Netflix released El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, picking up with Jesse directly after the events of the series finale. That said, the series finale of Better Call Saul may not be the last audiences see of its titular character.

In a recent interview with Extra, Odenkirk talked about struggling to say goodbye to Better Call Saul and his iconic character. The actor went on to joke about asking the creators for more work while addressing how he’d love to return for a spinoff movie in the vein of El Camino. Read the full quote below:

“I can’t say goodbye. It’s too much! It’s heartbreaking. I love them so much. A year from now, I’m going to be banging on Vince Gilligan’s door going, ‘Come on!’ … Oh yeah, [I’d return for a movie]. I love playing this guy. It’s a great joy. There’s never been a part that’s [as] well-written [as this], so I would love to do it again. Look, there are going to be new horizons and new characters to play, but this will be the apex of my acting career. It’s okay. I’m lucky to get this.”

As of right now, there are no plans for future shows or movies set in the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe. Universe creators, Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan, have said that they both plan on focusing on other projects but are still open to revisiting the franchise if the right idea presents itself down the road. Still, season 6 of Better Call Saul could very well be the end of Jimmy McGill and the Breaking Bad franchise as fans know it.

Odenkirk has also teased a tragic end for Better Call Saul season 6. After getting embroiled with the cartel, Jimmy has been on a downward spiral that is poised to destroy his new bride, Kim Wexler — who has seemingly abandoned altruism and joined her husband in the con game. On top of his dealings with Jimmy, Lao Salamanca is more than at odds with Gus Fring after the chicken king tried to kill him. As Better Call Saul melds into the Breaking Bad timeline and reveals Jimmy’s fate after the events of the flagship series, fans expect more cameos by beloved characters. The final season of Better Call Saul premieres April 18 on AMC.
