Is Beyond The Green Inferno still on director Eli Roth’s plate? Eli Roth burst onto the horror scene with gory directorial debut Cabin Fever. Roth has a fondness for extreme horror cinema, which he managed to bring to the mainstream with his two Hostel movies, though a sprinkling of dark humor helped make them more palatable. Since then, Roth’s career has taken some interesting directions, such as a period of acting in movies like Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds or 2010’s Piranha 3D.

In recent years, he helmed twisted Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock, the poorly received Death Wish remake starring Bruce Willis and the fantasy adventure The House With A Clock In Its Walls. He returned to directing after a six hiatus in 2013 with The Green Inferno. The movie was intended as an homage to films like the infamous Cannibal Holocaust. Not only did this 1980 horror inspire the found footage genre, but it also proved so visceral and convincing director Ruggero Deodato was brought before a court to prove he hadn’t actually murdered his cast onscreen. The film also kicked off a wave of disturbing Italian cannibal movies like Cannibal Apocalypse and Cannibal Ferox.

The Green Inferno didn’t receive great reviews upon release, though it had some notable fans like Stephen King (IT: Chapter 2), who praised its grimy retro feel. A sequel dubbed Beyond The Green Inferno was announced in 2013, but is it still coming?

The Green Inferno Set Up A Sequel

The Green Inferno followed a social-activism group who fly to the Amazon Rainforest to protest against a petrochemical company, but after a plane crash, they’re captured by a tribe of brutal cannibals. The movie ends with lead character Justine (Lorenza Izzo, Life Itself) escaping and making it back to America.

The movie ends with a mid-credit scene where Justine learning the untrustworthy leader of the protest group Alejandro also survived, and has apparently taken over the tribe. Beyond The Green Inferno was announced in 2013 with Roth’s Aftershock helmer Nicolas Lopez confirmed to direct, who compared the planned sequel’s tone to Aliens.

Beyond The Green Inferno Likely Won’t Happen

The initial announcement of Beyond The Green Inferno made it sound like work was quickly pressing ahead on the sequel, but it has yet to emerge. Outside of a 2016 Wrap article making a passing reference to the sequel still being developed, news of the sequel has gone cold.

Following sexual misconduct allegations leveled at Nicolas Lopez in 2018, the filmmaker is also unlikely to still be attached to Beyond The Green Inferno. Given the amount of time that’s passed and the first movie’s mixed reception and modest box office, it currently looks doubtful the sequel is still pressing ahead.
