Warning! Spoilers for the Wednesday, July 14 episode of Big Brother 23 below!

Following Brandon Frenchie’s chaotic Head of Household reign on Big Brother 23, Derek Xiao won the Power of Veto and used it to take Kyland Young off the block. Frenchie’s week as HOH has truly been one of the most chaotic moments in BB history. Among other things, Frenchie managed to promise safety to virtually every player in the house, and also told them all about his plans for forming a big alliance (the Slaughterhouse) and an inside alliance (the Butchers).

As this first week went on, the Big Brother 23 live feeds showed an erratic Brandon Frenchie who changed his targets with every new conversation. While it was pretty clear that Christian Birkenberger was a convenient target for Frenchie, he won the Wildcard competition and was given immunity for the week. Consequently, Frenchie nominated Alyssa Lopez for eviction for being seemingly close to Christian, and he nominated Kyland Young as a pawn. The entire house was shocked by those nominations, but Frenchie kept justifying it as having two pawns on the block so that he could backdoor Derek Xiao.

As seen in the BB23 live feeds, however, Derek Xiao won the Power of Veto. Initially, Brandon Frenchie had made himself clear that he wanted the veto to be used to save Kyland Young. But after making yet another 180-degree turn in his head, a relentless Frenchie attempted to convince Derek X to not use it. Nonetheless, Derek X did use the veto and saved Kyland from the nomination block, forcing Frenchie to pick a replacement nominee. During the veto ceremony, Frenchie chose Travis Long to be the replacement nom. As such, either Alyssa or Travis will be evicted on Thursday night.

Most of the Big Brother 23 house is gunning to take out Travis, so it is a pretty safe bet that Alyssa will be spared this time around. In turn, many fans are happy that the first evicted player is likely not going to be a woman or a person of color, which has been the case during most of the recent Big Brother seasons. With that said, Frenchie burned a lot of bridges this week, and it’s unlikely that his allies will truly trust him after his week as HOH is over. Frenchie ultimately did nominate someone that the entire house agreed on voting out, but he created a lot of chaos, uncertainty, and mistrust along the way.

Brandon Frenchie’s reign as HOH is making for excellent reality TV drama, but it has actually been disappointing and frustrating to viewers who believed what he was saying on night one. Not only is Frenchie not following up on his many promises, but he is also destroying his own game with the other houseguests who feel very confused about whatever he’s trying to do.
