On social media, Big Brother star Paul Abrahamian expressed a preference to be called by the gender-neutral pronouns they and them. On Big Brother 18, Paul fought their way to the end despite being nominated for eviction six times. They won the final Head of Household competition of the season, then decided to take Nicole Franzel to the Final 2 instead of James Huling. It seemed like a wise decision at the time, but Nicole won the $500,000 grand prize over Paul in a 5-4 jury vote. Some fans were happy for Nicole given that a female player hadn’t won the show since BB13, but other fans labeled Paul as “robbed.”

Paul then came back to compete the following year on Big Brother 19. That year, Paul earned “Friendship Bracelets” that gave them a slight advantage in the game. Still, this second shot at the show was once again an uphill battle for Paul. They were put up twice on the nomination block and won a total of three Head of Household competitions and five Power of Veto competitions. In a serious case of deja vu, Paul once again got to the Final 3. This time, however, they won the final HOH comp to Josh Martinez. Still, Josh chose to take Paul to the Final 2. In the end, Paul once again lost the grand prize to a 5-4 jury vote.

This Tuesday, September 22, a fan reached out to two-time Big Brother runner-up Paul Abrahamian pointing out that they noticed how Paul updated their Twitter bio. The fan under the username @cadylois said, “I’m not sure when you put your pronouns in your bio, but I just wanted to let you know that I’m over here nearly crying with solidarity/joy. Thank you for being you and reminding me that I’m not alone.” Paul replied with a black heart, and fans took notice that Paul had indeed updated their Twitter bio to add the “they/them” preferred pronouns. Paul hasn’t much about it since that interaction, but it must be noted that people who make their preferred pronouns known usually take some time to feel comfortable speaking on the matter and their reasons behind it.

The Big Brother fans should be respectful of Paul Abrahamian during this particular time. Publicly stating one’s preferred pronouns can lead to much larger conversations and follow-up questions, many of which they may or may not have answers to or feel like discussing at the time. Nonetheless, on a personal level, this is a big deal for Paul that the fans should celebrate. Paul reaches a wide array of fans through their careers in music and in reality TV – which means that this news has the potential to inspire several fans, just like the one who reached out on Twitter.

It is unlikely that Paul will ever return to compete on a future season of Big Brother. It seems like they are not interested in returning to the show at the moment, focusing instead on producing new music and digital content.

Big Brother 22: All-Stars airs Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 8pm EST on CBS.
