Netflix’s Big Mouth is about middle school kids who encounter their hormones for the first time, shown through their hormone monsters. The kids, being kids, are not the smartest, although there are some smarter than others. The hormone monsters are also pretty smart, even though their goals are never pure.

Through four seasons, the kids have grown and learned, both thanks to their hormone monsters and in spite of them, while others have regressed, and at least two major characters seem stinted to never achieve any growth in their lives at all. The intelligence levels of the main Big Mouth cast ranges from completely inept to promising, at best.

10 Rick

Nick had the worst time of any of the kids when he reached puberty because he picked up a completely worthless hormone monster. This was Rick, who also served as the hormone monster for Coach Steve, and everyone saw how that turned out in the end. Since Nick finally freed himself from Rick, the world’s worst hormone monster has occasionally popped up, mostly to annoy Connie and Maurice.

9 Coach Steve

Coach Steve never had a chance. His hormone monster was Rick, and the two were together until Steve was an adult since he never could move past puberty, even when he became the gym and sex-ed teacher for the school. He is clueless about everything, often confusing people’s statements and striking up very inappropriate relationships with students like Jay, and later with Jay’s mom. He is easily the least intelligent human on Big Mouth.

8 Jay

Jay lives in a world of his own delusions. His dad is a wealthy DUI attorney but has proven to be less than scrupulous, and Jay seems almost oblivious to this fact. He is a sexual deviant and usually makes do with his own pillows, although he has dated both Jessi and Lola. His mom was previously institutionalized, and it is clear that these problems pass down to Jay. There was a point in Season 4 that he and Lola clearly lived in a delusional world only they could see.

7 Lola

Lola is a loud and obnoxious girl who seems almost oblivious because she is so annoying. She demands attention and doesn’t care about what anyone else thinks or does as long as they pay attention to her.

Lola dated Andrew, but when he broke up with her, she broke his wrist. She dated Jay most recently, but when they broke up, he became her mortal enemy. Lola is also someone who trusts too easily and allows other people to influence what she believes and does.

6 Nick

Nick is the main character on Big Mouth and the one kid that most of what happens on the show revolves around. Sadly, he was at a disadvantage from the start when the hormone monster assigned to him was Rick, the worst hormone monster of all-time. Luckily, Nick ended up with Connie, the only boy with a female hormone monster. Nick also has an overprotective family, almost leaving him sheltered for his young life, and he has struggled to break from that since reaching adolescence.

5 Andrew

Andrew is Nick’s best friend and the second lead in the series. He is a lot like Nick, but he has the advantage of having Maurice as his hormone monster from the start, giving him a head start reaching his adolescence. He is about the same intelligence as Nick, although his dad is demanding for Andrew to succeed. While he might be a little smarter than Nick, he is also more inappropriate thanks to Maurey’s influence.

4 Jessi

Jessi is a close friend of Nick and Andrew and went through some hard times in the first season when her mother left her dad. Her dad was a pothead with little direction in his life, and her mother wanted better for her daughter and wanted to explore her own sexuality.

As a result, Jessi had to grow up faster than Nick and Andrew and luckily had Connie as her hormone monster, although this also resulted in several anger outbursts. She is clearly smarter than both Nick and Andrew, although she still has the mentality of a young teenager.

3 Missy

Missy is very smart, thanks mostly to her parents. She excelled in school, and while she was more innocent and oblivious to the world around her, that doesn’t diminish her brains. She even began to strike out and explore her heritage in Big Mouth Season 4. While she seems less intelligent than others, she was mostly innocent and naïve, but she has a strong moral compass and always tries to do the right thing in every situation.

2 Maury

Maury might act like a buffoon, but he knows what he is doing, and he does his job well. Maury knows what he needs to do to get Andrew to follow his worst hormone desires. Maury is a lot smarter than one might think when looking at him. He has no boundaries and is a crazed hormone monster that will get Andrew to do anything and everything to get satisfied. He has been around for thousands of years and has all that experience to lead him as he helps all his kids during puberty.

1 Connie

The smartest person on Big Mouth is Connie. While she is just like Maury and exists to make kids set out to achieve their basest desires, she is also very smart and has limitations that not even Maury has. In the start, Connie was mostly about making Jessi act out in anger, but as the series wore on, she has been more of a positive influence on both Jessi and Nick. Having two kids to deal with at once, it is clear she has the talents and brains to do her job, and she has proven more than once she can do it on a high level.
