Post-apocalyptic zombie survival game DayZ has received its biggest content update of 2021, introducing new areas, a rifle, and traps. The 1.14 update is now live on all platforms, offering new immersive gameplay improvements alongside a host of new features and additions for zombie video game fans to get stuck into.

DayZ first began life as an Arma 2 mod, with its popularity leading to a standalone release on PC in 2018, followed by Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launches in 2019. The game is set in the fictional post-Soviet Republic of Chernarus, and tasks players with surviving against both other players and infected zombies enemies. Players can choose to team up with others or try to survive solo, holding their own against the walking dead and enemy fire, while also maintaining their health by scavenging resources such as food, medicine, and clothing. While the game enjoyed high player numbers at launch, interest in DayZ has tapered off over the years, something which could be set to change with the 1.14 update.

DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive has outlined the new features available with the update, beginning with the Contaminated Areas. These new locations can be either static or dynamic, with static areas designed to store high-tier loot, while dynamic areas are created to “make the world more lively.” This has been achieved through visual and audio effects which aim to make the game more immersive than ever before. Hunting traps are another new addition the update introduces. A big fishnet trap, a small fish bottle trap, and a snare trap will each catch their own unique animal depending on their placement and the bait used. The new tripwire booby trap is also set to be yet another threat for players to watch out for. As for new weapons, the DayZ update has added the LE-MAS assault rifle, a first for the game, offering single, burst, and automatic fire. As an added bonus, DayZ players on PS5 can now enjoy the game at 60fps.

DayZ players have been asking for new content for the zombie game for some time, and the latest game update should help satisfy the fanbase. The new LE-MAS assault rifle is set to be a versatile yet impressive weapon that could change up how certain situations are approached, with its unique 25 round magazine primed to pack a punch against both the living and the undead. The new hunting traps also add further gameplay elements and should appeal to anyone who imagines themselves as the Daryl Dixon of DayZ.

The new DayZ content is primed to provide fans with lots more to do and explore. The update is one of the biggest the game has seen in a while, and will hopefully see former players delve into the action once again. Fans of end-of-the-world simulations who haven’t yet played DayZ can enjoy the game without purchasing it as part of their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription fee. It’s also available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
