Fate: The Winx Saga has a lot of unanswered questions at the end of season 1. Not only are there several longstanding mysteries that are never resolved, but the final 10 minutes of the series finale, episode 6, “A Fanatic Heart,” are packed with revelations. Plot twists related to Andreas, Rosalind, and Farrah Dowling leave the audience desperate to know more.

Fate: The Winx Saga is a Netflix adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon Winx Club. The six-episode show centers around a fire fairy named Bloom, a changeling who was left abandoned in the human world at birth. When Bloom arrives at Alfea, a magical school for fairies in the Otherworld, she starts to learn more about her past. As explores the Otherworld and learns to control her fire magic, she discovers secrets about Alfea that have been long buried.

The mystery of Bloom’s true heritage is related to the history of the war between the students of Alfea and the Burned Ones, scorched humanoid monsters who can leave victims with a deadly infection with one cut. Key soldiers in the war include Farrah Dowling, Alfea’s headmistress; Silva, a combat specialist; and Ben Harvey, an earth fairy and professor. The three were led by military commander Rosalind, who is connected to Bloom through Aster Dale, a village that was destroyed in the war. Bloom discovers all of this throughout season 1, but each new secret that’s uncovered leads to a dozen more questions. Here are the biggest ones to be answered in season 2.

What Really Happened at Aster Dale?

Bits and pieces of the history of Aster Dale are revealed through Fate: The Winx Saga season 1. Each character who talks about the small Otherworld village, however, only knows part of the story. The only person who seems to have all the facts is Rosalind, and, like many of the characters, she has hidden motives. By the end of season 1, it’s hard to know who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. After a multitude of conflicting narratives, perhaps season 2 will finally reveal the truth about what happened at Aster Dale.

When Aster Dale is first revealed in Fate: The Winx Saga season 1, episode 4, “Some Wrecked Angel,” Beatrix claims that it was a village full of innocent settlers that was overrun with Burned Ones. It was destroyed by Dowling, Harvey, and Silva, and was a war crime hidden by Queen Luna. Rosalind had a crisis of conscience, however, and rescued Beatrix and Bloom from the ashes of the city. In episode 5, “Wither Into The Truth,” Dowling challenges that narrative, saying she fell prey to Rosalind’s manipulations, and that she and Silva were unknowing participants in destroying Aster Dale. She frames the destruction of the village as her greatest regret, and that the experience led her to rebel against and imprison Rosalind.

The Fate season 1 finale, of course, holds the most revelations about Aster Dale. First, Silva tells Sky that he fought and killed Sky’s father, Andreas, at the village, to prevent him from helping Rosalind destroy it; however, the episode then reveals that Andreas is alive, raising further questions. How did Andreas survive the battle with Silva? Did Rosalind rescue him or arrange to have him sheltered by Queen Luna? And why has Andreas been in hiding all this time? Rosalind also claims in the season finale that, rather than innocent victims, Aster Dale was filled with blood witches, humans who sacrifice life to do magic. Silva, Dowling, and Bloom all seem to accept this as the truth — Silva and Dowling possibly because it eases a guilty conscience, and Bloom because it means her birth parents may still be alive. But Rosalind reveals this fact as she is trying to control Bloom, making the claim suspect. The questions remain: what really happened at Aster Dale, and what was the motivating factor for its destruction?

What is Rosalind’s Endgame?

One thing that’s clear from Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 is that Rosalind has long-term plans that were set in motion years before her imprisonment. Early in the season, memories buried in Beatrix and Bloom lead each of them to take action to free Rosalind. Once she’s free from her 16-year confinement, Rosalind immediately lets Burned Ones into the school, leading Bloom to embrace her full power, the power of the Dragon Flame. Throughout the season finale, Rosalind tries to persuade Bloom to join her. Bloom ends up refuting Rosalind’s attempts at control and manipulation, but does access the power of the Dragon Flame in the final minutes of episode 6, in accordance with Rosalind’s plan. One of Rosalind’s ultimate goals seems to be to gain control over Bloom so she can use the fire fairy’s power. The question is though, to what end? Does Rosalind want to use Bloom’s power to to destroy the Burned Ones? Or does she want to control the Burned Ones?

By the end of season 1, Rosalind has also taken over Alfea (a la Harry Potter), giving her more access to Bloom and her fellow students. The move keeps Rosalind close to Bloom’s power and gives her influence over the next generation of powerful fairies. Rosalind’s new reign aligns her with Queen Luna, Beatrix and Andreas. In the finale, Rosalind claims she needed Andreas to remain hidden so he could raise Beatrix, but it seems likely he also acted as an agent for her, secretly moving throughout the Otherworld. Andreas is onscreen for only a few minutes, leaving his character motivations a mystery. He seems to be loyal to Rosalind, but where do his true allegiances lie?

Another character that might give the audience insight into Rosalind’s goals is Beatrix. The young air fairy has been aligned with Rosalind since the start of season 1 and remains by her side at the end. But who is Beatrix? She was apparently raised by Andreas — is she Andreas’ biological daughter? Is she the child of blood witches? What else does Rosalind need her for? Rosalind, a military commander, could be trying to rebuild an army, one that is completely loyal to her. But after that, what next? Does she want to rule the Otherworld?

What is the Dragon Flame?

In the final minutes of Fate: The Winx Saga season 1, Rosalind tells Dowling that Bloom’s power originates from the Dragon Flame, a “powerful, primal” force that “burns inside our changeling friend.” She reveals that the Dragon Flame created the Burned Ones, who were ancient warriors. The flame, which Bloom accesses in the finale, also has the power to destroy the Burned Ones, returning them to their original human state. In the original Nickelodeon cartoon Winx Club, the Dragon Flame comes from the Great Dragon, an ancient magical creature who created the Magic Dimension (a.k.a. the Otherworld). In addition to giving control over fire, the Dragon Flame allows Bloom to heal the wounded, dying, and those under spells, and to sense danger and the magical essences of others.

Some of these powers are hinted at in the Netflix fantasy adaptation, but the full extent of Bloom’s abilities has yet to be seen. Accessing the power allows Bloom to grow wings of flame in the season finale — do they allow her to access other powers? The role of the Dragon Flame in Fate: The Winx Saga is also unknown. It seems to have implications for Rosalind’s grand plan as well as the war against the Burned Ones. Could Bloom also heal the Burned Ones, making them human again? Can she control them?

Who are Bloom’s Birth Parents?

Bloom spends most of Fate: The Winx Saga season 1 going to extraordinary lengths to find the truth about her birth parents. She spies on the headmistress, breaks into locked rooms, and even frees Rosalind, one of the most dangerous military commanders in the Otherworld’s history. But by the end of the season, Bloom (and the audience) are still in the dark as to her true heritage. Bloom, a changeling, is a fire fairy who was taken from the Otherworld and hidden in the First World by Rosalind. Her human birthday is only a few days after the destruction of Aster Dale, so at first, Bloom thinks that her birth parents may be from the village. Later, Rosalind claims that Bloom was kidnapped by blood witches, meaning Bloom’s birth parents could be anyone. At the end of season 1, Bloom is once again at a dead end regarding her origins.

Since Bloom already looked through Alfea’s student records — and pressed Dowling on the identity of her birth parents with no luck — it’s unlikely her parents attended the magical school. Perhaps her birth parents are from another continent in the Otherworld — Eraklyon or Linphea. Bloom’s parents may be Solarian, although if they are, that raises a question as to why they gave her up. If Bloom’s parents are from Solaria, are they aligned with Queen Luna? Are they in hiding? Or did they die in the war against the Burned Ones?

In the original Winx Club cartoon, Bloom is magical royalty, the daughter of the king and queen of Domino, a realm within the Otherworld. Domino is home to the Great Dragon, who entrusted the royal family with the power of its flame. Fate: The Winx Saga could adapt this story in season 2, but with Netflix’s apathetic attitude toward canon, Bloom’s heritage remains a true mystery.
