Action RPG Biomutant recently received a substantial level cap increase, along with an extensive number of bug fixes and improvements. Developer Experiment 101 announced the changes as part of the massive Patch 1.5 update, which went live on June 18.

Published by THQ Nordic, Biomutant was released on May 25 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with next-gen console versions planned for the future. The game was developed by former employees of Avalanche, a studio known for the Just Cause series. Unlike the Just Cause franchise, which takes place in a setting at least somewhat grounded in reality, Biomutant is set in a world filled with mutated animals whose tribes vie for control of the polluted Tree of Life. The game features heavy RPG elements and crafting. In terms of combat, players use elemental powers, melee, shooting, and agile maneuvering to defeat enemies in styles reminiscent of traditional martial arts.

The increase to Biomutant‘s level cap was announced in a press release on THQ Nordic’s website as part of Patch 1.5, which is available now for PC and PS4 (the Xbox One update is coming within a week). While the level cap was set to fifty prior to the patch, players can now rank up to level 100. In addition, relic and legendary weapon components of higher tier will begin dropping when players hit level fifty. Improving the overall quality and experience of the looting system was a big focus for Patch 1.5. There will now be fewer duplicate loot spawns, as well as better versions of the same loot at higher levels. Most importantly, the game now features a scrap action on the loot screen. This should minimize the overall time players spend in the menus.

The total list of changes in Patch 1.5 is extensive, ranging from UI and Settings updates to quest and combat improvements. For the UI, there’s now a Dynamic option that limits how often persistent elements are present on screen, and a Quick Menu Toggle accessibility feature has been added. In terms of combat, dodge can now be used to cancel certain attack animations, and an optional lock-on is available for melee encounters. New Game+ received modifiers that can increase the difficulty in both the current New Game+ iteration, as well as subsequent loops. The map has also been updated with indicators for completed area objectives. Finally, enemy respawns have been added to various areas in the world, and the spawn rate of random encounters has increased.

Experiment 101’s commitment to updates and stability improvements shows a willingness to create the best experience for the current Biomutant playerbase. The game received middling reviews when it first released; fans and critics praised the art style but found the combat disappointingly shallow. This update proves that the developers are listening to feedback and striving to create a more enjoyable experience for all. As an added bonus, newcomers may be enticed by the growing feature set, which could result in increased sales. With Patch 1.5 out now for PC and PS4, there’s never been a better time to jump in.

Biomutant is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Coming soon to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
