Bachelor In Paradise star Caelynn Miller-Keyes gave an update about her and Dean Unglert’s dog, Alastor, after an accident during which he bit her face. Caelynn and Dean met on Bachelor In Paradise season 6 in 2019 and have been together ever since. In February 2020, they adopted their beloved advanced age rescue dog, Pappy. Although he was only expected to live for about a year after they adopted him, he lived with Caelynn and Dean for almost two years. They were devastated when Pappy passed away on November 29, 2021.

In January 2022, Caelynn and Dean adopted another rescue dog of an advanced age, 9-year-old Alastor Moody. He is named after the Harry Potter character, Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody because of his eyes. Alastor is not blind, but has a birth defect. On his Instagram account, Dean called him their “sweet wonky eyed boy.” On her YouTube vlog in late January, Caelynn revealed that she had to visit the emergency room because Alastor bit her on the lip during an unfortunate accident involving another dog. Alastor had become frightened by a German Shepherd, and Caelynn admitted that she made a mistake as an “uninformed dog parent,” and picked him up while he was in his “animal mode.” Alastor latched on to her face, giving her a bite on the lip that required four to five stitches. Caelynn acknowledged that compared to some other dog bites, hers was not that bad, but she knew that Alastor needed help. After the incident, Caelynn was committed to hiring a trainer for him so that nothing like this ever happens again.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Caelynn made an appearance on Dean’s podcast, Help! I Suck At Dating during which she gave fans an update about Alastor. She called him “the sweetest dog in the world,” but added that she is still looking for a trainer for him to help address some of his issues. Caelynn is focused on finding a trainer that is not going to use shock collars on him, and who will not abuse him in any way. She wants to make sure that he is taken care of. Caelynn said that Alastor barks at every single person and animal that he sees, and she wants him to be well-behaved. However, Dean feels that it is a “cop-out” to hire a trainer for Alastor, and that they should train him themselves. He said that it has been a point of contention between them. Dean admitted that it might be difficult to train an older dog, but he wants to try.

Dean further explained some of Alastor’s behavior, saying, “He gets very emotional around other dogs. He freaks out. He barks. He lunges. Not even just dogs. If someone walks a little too quickly in his direction, he’ll get a little upset about it. If someone rides a bicycle or even is driving a car down the street, he’ll get a little upset.” Caelynn joked that Alastor gets upset “if anyone moves, if anyone breathes.” Dean added that if no one moved or did anything, he would be a pretty well-behaved dog. Dean feels that “the owner’s energy is reflected by the dog.” Caelynn said that she knows that Dean thinks that she is stressed around Alastor, and is then causing the dog stress. However, she explained, “I have anxiety because he just bit my face, and I had to get stitches.”

Dean said that he totally understands her concerns, but “when you’re on edge around a dog that’s already on edge, your being on edge is going to set him over the top.” However, Caelynn emphasized that her fear is that Alastor is going to bite someone else and that it will be much worse than hers, and that they will be sued. She wants to prevent that from happening. Caelynn admitted to being a “helicopter parent,” and Dean acknowledged that this has shown them that their prospective parenting styles are on the opposite sides of the spectrum. Caelynn thinks that this is a good thing, but Dean disagreed because he feels that it is confusing for Alastor when they try to train him, and he then loses progress.

Thankfully, Caelynn’s accident with Alastor did not result in too severe of an injury, although the emotional trauma can last much longer than the physical wound. Although they differ in their opinions about how it should be done, they know that Alastor needs some help, and they love him enough that they are willing to get it for him. Hopefully, Bachelor In Paradise fan-favorites Caelynn and Dean will be able to compromise about how to train Alastor so that he can live out the rest of his days with them peacefully and happily.
