Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has a hilarious Batman joke in its end-credits gag, but which Batman was it about? Birds of Prey released in theaters in February but found its way onto digital platforms early due to theaters being closed and people self-isolating. That means people can revisit the film’s end-credits joke sooner rather than later, especially if they missed it in theaters.

Birds of Prey follows Harley Quinn after a break-up with her abusive boyfriend, the Clown Prince of Crime himself – the Joker. Learning how to be self-sufficient, Harley Quinn ultimately finds herself being hunted by the villain Black Mask. And so, she finds herself surrounded by Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and teen pickpocket Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) – and they all work together to defeat the Gotham gangster. While there wasn’t anything in the credits to setup a sequel, despite there being some obvious routes the studio could take, the film ended with a simple joke about Batman.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Towards the end of the credits in Birds of Prey, audiences can hear Margot Robbie, still in character as Harley Quinn, saying that she knows a secret about Batman. She breaks the fourth wall and says, “Are you dummies still sittin’ there? Fine. Since you stuck it out this long, I’ll tell you a super duper secret secret. You can’t tell anyone. Okay. Did you know that Batman f-“. The brief audio clip is a reference to the Harley Quinn animated series on DC Universe, where Harley consistently makes jokes about Batman having sex with bats. Given the film’s development timeline and the fact that it exists in the DCEU, the Batman she’s referring to is likely Ben Affleck’s.

With Robert Pattinson as the new Batman, it makes sense that there would be some confusion about which Batman Harley Quinn was referring to. But the fact of the matter is, Affleck’s Batman is still the Batman of her world, not Pattinson – at least not yet. It’s always a possibility that Warner Bros. could drop Pattinson’s Batman into the rest of the DCEU at a later point, but at first, it remains separate from that universe.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which has seen its production be put on hold due to coronavirus fears, has at least two characters that have been recast from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, thus placing the story in an entirely new continuity. Robbie’s Harley Quinn, however, continues the same continuity that was previously established in Suicide Squad, which very much exists in the same franchise as the other DCEU films.
