Misha Green, the writer for HBO Max’s Black Canary, has confirmed that she will pull inspiration from the comic books when asked on Twitter, stating the importance of research when working on the film. The film will see Jurnee Smollett return to play Dinah Lance following her debut in 2020’s Birds of Prey. Green and Smollett previously worked together on the 2020 HBO series Lovecraft Country.

Smollett first appeared in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, portraying the DC heroine alongside Margot Robbie, Marie Elizabeth-Winstead, Rosie Perez, and Ella Jay Basco. Smollett’s Dinah is introduced as a singer-turned-personal driver for Ewan McGregor’s Roman Sionis/Black Mask before betraying the crime boss when he targets Basco’s Cassandra Cain. Dinah joins Harley to take on Roman before going on to establish the Birds of Prey team. Black Canary’s solo film was confirmed in August, and now Green has offered insight into her writing process.

When Green was asked about her writing process on Twitter, one fan replied to her tweet by asking whether she had read any Black Canary comics for inspiration. Green confirmed she is pulling inspiration from the source material. She then elaborated that research is key when working on the film. Check out Green’s response below.

While Green has confirmed she will pull inspiration from the comics, Smollett has also stated previously that she took inspiration from other DC media for her portrayal of Dinah. Before the release of Birds of Prey, Smollett said in an interview that she took inspiration from the fighting game Injustice 2 when developing Black Canary’s Canary Cry and other attacks during the film’s climax. Smollett also admitted she’d be open to returning to the role in a TV series prior to the Black Canary film’s initial announcement, showing that she is a passionate supporter of her character.

Between both Green and Smollett, it is evident that the upcoming HBO Max film is in safe hands. Not only have the pair worked together before on Lovecraft Country, but Green and Smollett have shown the utmost care when handling the characters, being unafraid to take inspiration from the character’s long history and many appearances. As such, it is clear that fans can expect both Green and Smollett to make HBO Max’s Black Canary film a celebration of the character’s history.
