Warning: spoilers ahead for Black Cloverchapter 319!

Fans are having a difficult time imagining how Black Clovercan continue once Asta and seven of his kingdom’s nine captains inevitably defeat Lucifero the King of Devils, but recent teasers provide some possibilities.

The reason behind fans’ incredulity stems from how intrinsically linked the entire Black Clover universe is with devils. Even though these monstrous creatures first appeared in chapter 196, mangaka Yūki Tabata used them to turn his entire story upside-down, somehow superseding his earlier massive twist. The series’ most organized villainous organization until that moment, the Eye of the Midnight Sun, was actually just a pawn. The group’s leader Licht didn’t want to help his members awaken. He was using them as sacrifices to initiate a massive reincarnation of elves to enact vengeance against the humans who massacred his people so long ago. But when that first devil appeared, it was revealed that devils were actually the true villains. They poisoned the minds of humans to betray the elves and then filled the surviving elves with a fake desire to seek revenge.

It’s easy to see why some fans are wondering how the story can continue once the king of all devils is gone, but there are still other devils out there. Of course, readers are aware of the ones associated with the Dark Triad, a group of three siblings from the Spade kingdom’s Zogratis family. Dark Triad members have been using their bodies as vessels for devils and endeavoring to open the Tree of Qliphoth between the realm of the living and the underworld. Zogratis’ Dante, Vanica and Zenon are hosts to Lucifero, Megicula and Beelzebub, respectively, with the latter devil only appearing in chapter 306’s flashback. But there are other major devils. The first one can be traced back to the Black Bulls’ powerful vice captain-at-large Nacht. In chapter 286, a flashback of Nacht’s tragic past revealed that his family studied devils and Nacht, being the good son, followed in his parents’ footsteps by summoning the supreme devil Lucifugus. The last time readers saw Lucifugus, the supreme devil apparently killed Nacht’s entire family, but definitely his brother, the black sheep of the family Morgen. Beyond devils, chapter 310 also revealed that there were originally four Zogratis siblings, not just three. It’s possible that this fourth is still alive and could appear later.

On top of Black Clover immediately setting its heroes against the King of Devils, mangaka Yūki Tabata greatly expedited a procedure that could have lasted for numerous chapters. The aforementioned Tree of Qliphoth that the Black Clover villains of the Dark Triad summoned originally had nine gates that were supposed to open in succession. The format was that the devils behind each gate would get progressively stronger, with the most powerful of them spilling out of the ninth and final gate at the end. But Moris Libardirt, originally of the Diamond kingdom who later joined the Dark Triad, betrays his allies by releasing Lucifero earlier.

In addition to the above mysterious villains and devils, it’s possible that someone could still destroy the Tree of Qliphoth, effectively closing its gates and forcing the devils, including Lucifero, to return to the underworld. A possible follow-up to this event could involve an invasion of the underworld. What would make this upcoming arc even more interesting is that it’s assumed only Asta (and his devil partner Liebe) would be able to cross this threshold. During Liebe’s origin story, some devils who were bullying him threw Liebe into a wall but because he had no magic, Liebe flew right through and landed in the human world. No other devils can achieve this, hence why they need the Tree of Qliphoth. If the same rule applies to human mages, then the only other lifeform besides Liebe who can pass through this is Asta, which would greatly complicate their chances of success, but make the future chapters of Black Clovereven more riveting than it is already.
