Over the course of four seasons and 170 episodes, the ultra-popular anime Black Clover won fans’ hearts through its likable cast of characters. Although much of the action revolves around the three main protagonists, Asta, Yami, Noelle, and the rest of the Black Bulls, several side characters continue to stand out due to their entertaining personalities and supportive narrative arcs.

With the highly amusing series ending its run in 2021, now is a great time to look back and highlight the most compelling supporting characters that fans would love to see more of in the future in some capacity.

10 Klaus Lunettes

At first blush, Klaus Lunettes is a typical snobby royal who looks down on those beneath his social status. However, thanks to training hard with Asta in close-range attacks, Klaus became a much more humble and down-to-earth side character who became far more likable over time. The way he constantly futzes with his glasses also makes him wildly endearing.

The Golden Dawn/Royal Knights mage makes a hugely compelling character turn upon acknowledging and approving of Asta and Yuno’s previously disrespected skills after searching a dungeon. Later, Klaus cheers Asta on while fighting Liebe, cementing his lovable loyalty to the likable crew members.

9 Sol Marron

So extreme is Sol Marron’s seething hatred of men that her prejudicial outlook can only be met with lovable laughter. A big front, the Blue Rose mage is actually far more willing to cooperate with her so-called hated opposite sex, especially if it leads to Charlotte’s safety. She kindly yet incompetently helps Asta take on Langris and later joins Yuno to slay the Golden Dawns, which only endears her more.

What makes Sol so compelling, beyond her wish to see women rise up and usurp the power of male hegemony, is her unwavering devotion to Charlotte. Her man-hating can get a little tired after a while, but Sol is a progressive side character that is easy to root for.

8 Leopold Vermillion

As Asta’s friendly rival for the Magic Emperor, Leopold is a rebellious hellion who leads with his gut rather than his head. This leads to hilarious situations that make Leo a joy to watch, especially in the way he tries to overshadow his powerful siblings Fuegoleon and Mereoleona.

Leopold’s most likable quality is leaving his snooty royal background behind and accepting Yuno as an equal. He also assists Asta in fighting the Eye of the Midnight Sun, proving that his morality trumps his desire to become the Magic Emperor. Not for nothing, but his terrible singing and taste in artwork only make him funnier.

7 Dorothy Unsworth

The hilarious polarization of Dorthy Unsworth alone makes her one of the easiest characters to watch and root for on one of the best anime series from the 2010s. She vacillates between incessant sleep and high-energy awakeness, with almost no room in between.

When Dorothy is awake, she is always in a good mood and ready to take on the world without a care. Yet, she’s also extremely warmhearted towards others, often serving as a big sister figure to the younger magicians in the Coral Peacock squad. Adorably outmatched, the time she tried to save Asta from Lucifero was truly endearing.

6 Kahono

One of the most blithe and bubbly side characters of all, Kahono is a priestess of the Seabed Temple who dreams of nothing more than becoming a popular chanteuse. She finds serene inspiration from the sound of crashing waves and shows nothing but helpful benevolence to her best friend Noelle. She’s positive, upbeat, and highly supportive in the beloved dark fantasy anime.

Between practicing union magic with her brother Kiato, listening to Noelle’s feelings about Asta, or healing Asta’s fatigue when they first met, Kahono radiates a warm and welcoming aura that is impossible to dislike. Alas, her limited screen time drops her down a peg or two.

5 Rill Boismortier

Rill is another fan-favorite side character who people would love to see more of in the future. The Aqua Deer Captain is not only extremely cordial to friends and strangers alike, but his constant hobby of painting pictures at the cost of important missions is truly hilarious.

Aside from the way he immediately welcomes and supports Asta and Yuno with open arms, it’s Rill’s humility as a royal who does not care about the regal status of his family that makes him such a lovable person to follow. Perhaps most endearing? Rill likes to do bad impersonations of others, which almost always backfire.

4 William Vengeance

Despite his vindictive namesake, William Vengeance is one of the kindest, calmest, and friendliest side characters on the beloved anime. Defined by a beaming smile beneath a mask, the Golden Dawn’s first captain has a strong moral fiber to go with his pleasant demeanor.

Part of what makes William so lovable is his troubled upbringing and the pain he overcame to assume the role of captain. Arguably the most benevolent side character, William does not judge those based on their past. William even shares a body with the evil elf Patoli, who tries to corrupt his soul. Yet, William is so kind and forgivable that he isn’t affected by Patoli’s evil sway at all.

3 Gauche Adlai

Despite his glaring misanthropy, Gauche Adlai’s loving devotion and painful dedication to keeping his sister Marie safe make him extremely easy to root for on the stellar demon anime. He hates everyone except Marie, including Asta at first, who Marie plans to marry. So intense is Gauche’s compassion for Marie that he gets random nosebleeds thinking about her plight.

Much like Klaus, Gauche evolves and becomes far more likable over time. After Marie directly confronts him for being mean and selfish, which makes him have a drastic change of heart, he joins Asta and Saint Theresa in their fight against Baro and Sally. Gauche learns how to love others, which makes him supremely likable.

2 Mars

One of the most popular side characters of all, Mars’ loving kinship with his childhood friend Fana is just one reason why he’s so compelling. He’s also brash, funny, and imminently quotable. However, it’s his fight with Asta that frees him from his brainwashed state as a Shining General, vowing to take a secret mission to free innocents in the Diamond Kingdom. The way he saves Domina and Fanzell is truly heroic.

Like Gauche and Klaus, Mars evolves over time to become Asta’s true ally, becoming far kinder and quieter in his personality as the series progresses. Moreover, Zenon slaughtering his mates only made fans’ hearts go out to Mars even more.

1 Zora Ideale

As the comical resident Black Bulls prankster, Zora is the most enjoyable side character to watch in Black Clover. He constantly harasses Asta with Rainbow Stink Bug pranks and hilariously, hypocritically chastises his friends and strangers alike.

Yet, when push comes to shove, Zora has Asta’s back without question or compromise. As his name suggests, Zora conceals an idealistic side that is far more benevolent deep down than his prickly facade would indicate. Most telling, Zora’s arc in the Royal Knights Selection Exam is among the best arcs in the entire series as it shows how his violent past is not his fault, thereby conjuring deep sympathy.
