Warning! Spoilers ahead for Black Clover chapter 342!

The so-called King of Devils Lucifero rightfully startled readers for his blatant discriminatory behavior when he first exploded onto the scene in Black Clover, but he’s actually not the most twisted of his kind.

One of Black Clover‘s major themes includes discrimination against those with lesser magic. This bigotry runs rampant in the human realm, but even among devils. Lucifero’s distaste for magicless creatures especially knows no bounds. In chapter 320, the King of Devils beats Asta into a comatose state partly because he was so disgusted at the thought that a boy with no magical power could actually hurt him. Lucifero clearly favors this form of hatred as he later says, “I can’t just let a peasant kid show me up like that!” His words are so direct that the nobleman Nozel Silva picks up on it and immediately retorts with, “I, a royal, learned something from that peasant. Anyone can fight those who are far above them!

The most twisted devil is actually Megicula who possesses the Dark Triad member Vanica. This isn’t even completely the case because of her behavior in chapter 297. She is the sole reason behind why fan-favorite character Noelle Silva suffered as much as she did. Years ago, Vanica used Megicula to curse Noelle’s mother, and the very nature of the curse forced Noelle’s older brother Nozel to treat his younger sister horrifically as a means to protect her. It wasn’t until Noelle learned the truth that Nozel finally revealed why he mistreated her. To a lesser extent, Megicula’s power also cursed Captain Charlotte Roselei, though Charlotte later reversed the hex to work in her favor. And more recently, Megicula cursed the Heart Kingdom princess Lolopechka, and randomly decided to alter the curse to make Lolopechka a devil before she died just because she could.

While despicable, the manner in which Megicula betrays her host Vanica is so diabolical that readers are forced to sympathize with Vanica despite the years of suffering she inflicted on so many people. Every possessed Dark Triad member bases their worth on the devils they chose to host, and yet, Vanica learns at the last moment before Megicula tosses her aside that she was just being used as a sacrifice so her devil could fully manifest in the physical realm. Even Lucifero doesn’t kill his host, Dante. Dante was randomly killed by another villain – after being beaten in a way that shattered a stagnant shonen formula. It’s also assumed that the other Dark Tiriad member Zenon was killed by Yuno, and not by Zenon’s devil Beelzebub. In fact, Lucifero’s host Dante was a more chilling villain than the King of Devils. While alive, Dante espoused a very troubling view of women that was possessive to a twisted degree. He first directed his possessiveness towards the Black Bulls page Vanessa, declaring that she would be his woman. When Vanessa later used her power against him, he tells her that because she’s his, she can only use her magic for him.

Lucifero’s outburst might have been shockingly violent in Black Clover, especially since his rage was fueled by aggressive and hateful language, but it pales in comparison to the amount of suffering that Megicula has inflicted on others, even on her own host Vanica. Meanwhile, Lucifero either didn’t attempt or was beaten to the punch with his own host by a mere mortal. Lucifero’s twisted personality is also further diminished when put into perspective with his parasite’s unfortunate mindset regarding women. And what about that new devil Adrammelech who nonchalantly refuses to help Lucifero the King of Devils because they would rather watch them fight? Despite being setup as Black Clover’sbig villain, Lucifero is actually weak.
