Blade: Trinity writer/director David S. Goyer responded to the rumors of the alleged Wesley Snipes strangulation incident. The third and final film in this iteration of the Blade series was released in 2004. This time, the FBI is coming after Blade (Snipes) after he’s framed for numerous murders. He must work with the Nightstalkers, who are a group of vampire hunters, if he hopes to defeat Dracula himself. The film also stars Kris Kristofferson, Parker Posey, Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel, Patton Oswalt, among others.

In 2012, Oswalt talked about his experience filming Blade: Trinity. In addition to stating that Snipes was bad to work with, he alleged that he attempted to strangle Goyer. After a night at a strip club, he claimed that the relationship between Goyer and Snipes turned sour, which resulted in the star only communicating with the director via Post-it notes that he would sign “From Blade.” However, Snipes denied the allegations and said that if he were to have strangled Goyer, he would have been arrested.

In an interview with THR, Goyer addressed the rumor that Snipes strangled him back when filming Blade: Trinity. He expressed his respect for his acting talent and that they used to be friends, but aren’t any longer. He mentioned that the overall production was unenjoyable and that nobody involved was impressed with the final product. See below for Goyer’s full comment:

Let’s just say I have tremendous respect for Wesley as an actor. He used to be a friend. We’re not friends anymore. I am friends with Patton and I worked with Patton since so … I don’t think anyone involved in that film had a good experience on that film, certainly I didn’t. I don’t think anybody involved with that film is happy with the results. It was a very tortured production.”

Blade: Trinity had a global intake of $132 million at the box office on a reported budget of $65 million. Despite the film’s box office performance, it was the worst-reviewed installment of the trilogy. Additionally, Snipes sued New Line and Goyer in 2005, alleging that he was removed from any decisions made regarding the film, despite his role as a producer. Only a year later, Snipes was sued by United Talent Agency (UTA) for supposedly not paying them based on his earnings. This would end up being Snipes’ last film to hit theaters until Brooklyn’s Finest was released in 2009.  Snipes previously stated that he had some conversations with Marvel Studios to return to the role for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While a Blade film has been confirmed for Phase 5, Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) will be starring in the title role.

When Goyer called this “a very tortured production,” he wasn’t kidding. Between the Blade: Trinity‘s issues during production and the lawsuits that came from it, there was a lot going on with this third installment. While Goyer’s statement to THR doesn’t claim that the strangulation took place, he also never denies it. Rather, he focused on talking about the overall negative tone of the production and the respect that he has for Snipes as an actor. Regardless of whether or not it happened, they clearly aren’t friends anymore.
