Bling Empire: Fans Question That Kim Lee Is a Self-Made Millionaire

Viewers of Bling Empirehave devoured the show, binging the first season and trying to find out all they can about the stars of the show. With no season two announced by Netflix yet, viewers are taking comfort in directing every detail of the show with each other on social media. Recently fans took to Reddit to debate Kim Lee’s status as a “self-made millionaire.”

Bling Empire has broken new ground by having a cast of almost entirely Asian Americans. While they are all millionaires, fans have been able to relate to some of the cast’s struggles that transcend incomes, such as grief over the passing of a loved one, infertility struggles, and relationship problems. But Redditors thought there is a stark difference between Kim’s self-made millions and other’s experiences.

Kim is a successful DJ and has also worked as a model and actress. Redditors acknowledged that Kim worked hard to get where she is today. The issue was that she came from a family that was already well-off. They pointed out that investing or starting a business is a different experience when you have the safety net of a wealthy family. As user theblackeyedflower put it, “It’s easy to score a home run when you’re born on third base.” When fellow cast member Kane Lim borrowed money from his family and started investing at just 17, he could take big financial risks because even if he lost it all, he would still have a life of luxury. There was no fear of having to live in his car or having no way of recovering from a massive financial loss.

Redditors also pointed out that if you are not having to think about where your next meal will come from or how you’re going to afford to pay your rent, it’s easier to focus on succeeding in your career. With her family’s multiple luxury homes, Kim never had to worry about not having a roof over her head. It gave her an advantage and calls into question if she would have been able to throw herself fully into her DJ career if she didn’t have her family’s money behind her.

On top of that, there is Kim’s stepfather. Bling Empire highlighted the alleged search for Kim’s birth father, but Kim is reportedly very close to her stepfather Daniel Segal. Daniel is an author, screenwriter, and producer who has done very well for himself and allowed Kim to live all over the world, including France and Australia. He no doubt had contacts that came in handy to help Kim break into highly competitive careers like modeling and acting. In an industry that’s all about who you know, having a stepfather who is in the business is a definite shortcut to success.

Kim has put in the work to reach her career accomplishments, culminating in getting to watch herself on Bling Empire. But the term “self-made” is not wholly true, as she had more money behind her than many people will have in a lifetime. Maybe the situation requires a new word that gives people credit for the work they’ve done while acknowledging the advantages they had to start out.
