The cast of the hit reality series from Netflix, Bling Empire, has a lot in common. First and foremost, they possess a kind of staggering wealth that’s difficult to comprehend if you yourself aren’t in possession of similar coinage. Even the well-off Kevin Kreider struggled to understand Jaime’s Xie’s $19k rent. When he told her his rent was $1k, she told him that wasn’t even a pair of shoes. He proceeded to pick Jaime up and toss her in the pool and we all cheered. Aside from their shared understanding of what it means to live with mind-blowing riches, the cast also comes together over the importance of family. Whether it is the family they came from or the family they are creating with their partners, the entire cast is truly devoted to respecting the family unit.

Each cast member has a storyline that in some way revolves around their family. Kevin Kreider struggles to come to terms with his identity as an adopted Korean-American while still expressing his love for his white, adoptive parents. Kim Lee is devastated to learn that the estranged father she went in search of had actually already passed away. And Christine Chiu goes head-to-head with her husband, celebrity plastic surgeon, Dr. Gabriel Chiu, over whether or not to have another child. Her first child, a son nicknamed Baby G, was incredibly difficult to conceive, carry, and deliver. Interestingly, however, the potentially most-affable cast member, the one who’s there for all of them as they go on emotional family journeys, Kane Lim, is the one who doesn’t have a storyline about his family. Kane is a proud Singaporean who never once rested on his father’s wealth. At age seventeen, Kane asked his father, who taught him at a very young age the importance of hard work, for a small loan. In two months, Kane had invested the loan and made enough off of the investment to pay his father back and then some. By age twenty, Kane had made his first million. Today, at thirty-one, Kane boasts an impressive investment portfolio (and an even more impressive collection of designer shoes).

But the lovable Kane was surprisingly mum on his family throughout season one and continues to be so now in his new-found mega fame as a reality star. Little is truly known about his family members. What we do know is that he loves them and he loves Singapore. So it must have been pretty painful for Kane when he reached out to tell his family about Bling Empire reaching the top ten on Netflix Singapore. Kane sent a message on WhatsApp to tell his family the news only to receive a chilly silence in return, according to CNA Lifestyle. Kane deleted his message saying, “You know Asian parents. I could tell that everyone read my messages, but there was no comment. So I deleted them. I was a bit disappointed but I’m used to it.” Later the star’s family finally replied with vague congratulations, saying, “Oh, what an achievement.”

Kane felt the fakery but didn’t let it get to him. He accepts that his upbringing and his family are very traditionally Chinese. They have their own way of showing Kane they are proud of him. Still, Kane says that he hopes, “what Asian parents can take away from this show is how to express their love to their kids more openly.” Keep doing the good work, Kane!
