Despite it coming unexpectedly early due to Netflix’s cancelation of the series, the final season of BoJack Horseman managed to wrap up the series and show just how much each of the main characters had grown since the first season. Since the show was running for 6 seasons, the characters have had plenty of chances to change, for better or worse.

One of the characters that changed the most over that time was Diane, played by Alison Brie. Here are 10 ways she changed from Season 1 to the finale of BoJack Horseman.

10 She Had an Abortion

After Diane breaks her wrist and gets taken to the hospital by Mr. Peanutbutter, they both learn that she was also pregnant. After a fairly short discussion, they both decided that it would be best if she got an abortion since neither of them wanted kids.

Unfortunately, due to BoJack’s pestering, she accidentally tweeted out that she was having one from celebrity Sextina Aquafina’s account, resulting in the singer having to have a fake abortion and leading to the song “Get Dat Fetus Kill Dat Fetus”

9 She Gets Divorced

When we first get introduced to Diane in season 1, she is dating Mr. Peanutbutter and they would eventually get married later in the season. While their relationship seemed to be going well at the start, it soon took on a rather toxic dynamic and Diane realized her marriage to Mr. Peanutbutter wasn’t meeting her expectations.

After trying and failing to make it work, Diane confessed she was no longer happy and the two ended up getting divorced in season 5.

8 She Got a Haircut

After her divorce to Mr. Peanutbutter in season 5, Diane decides to change her appearance to reflect the changes that were occurring in her life at the time.

While she has said multiple times how much she loved her hair, she decides to cut most of it off, leaving her with an undercut bob. When the series ends, it’s grown a little bit longer but is still kept relatively short.

7 She Got Remarried

Season 6 introduced us to Guy, Diane’s Bison boyfriend played by Lakeith Stanfield, who she met while working for Girl Croosh. As time went on and they collaborated on more projects, they got closer and eventually moved in together.

Despite a few rough patches, Diane seemed pretty happy in the relationship so it wasn’t much of a shock when she showed off her wedding ring to BoJack during their final talk.

6 She Became a Stepmom

After being in a relationship with Guy for some time, Diane eventually meets Sonny, Guy’s teenage son from his previous relationship with his ex-wife, Lady.

While meeting him initially intimidates Diane as the two struggle to connect, they eventually come to bond over her book “Ivy Tran, Food Court Detective” with him even making suggestions while he still tries to seem “cool”.

5 She Gained Weight

After feeling stressed as a result of her new book deal, her boyfriend and her therapist advise her to take antidepressants. While she initially decides against it, she eventually starts taking them, which results in a significant change in her mood and productivity.

In addition to her change in mental state, it also affected her physically with her gaining a decent amount of weight as a result.

4 She Moved to Houston

This season saw Diane permanently leave LA despite living there for most of her adult life. She first moved to Chicago to live with Guy after reading a letter from BoJack that convinces her to go.

Then, later on, Guy revealed that he was going to have to move to Houston since Lady got a job there and was taking Sonny with her. At first, she says that she couldn’t go with him and it seemed like the end of their relationship but she ultimately makes the choice to join him there and it would be where the two would get married.

3 She Got a New Jacket

Often times in animated shows, characters don’t usually experience wardrobe changes and are often shown wearing the same outfits from start to finish, except in special situations. For the first 5 seasons, Diane wore her iconic green jacket with red arrows and would get a longer version of it when she would move to Chicago.

However, in season 6, she ended up replacing the green jacket with a red and blue one with blue arrows after she started taking her antidepressants.

2 She’s a franchise Author

As a writer, Diane spent a lot of her time determined to establish herself as a serious author and was trying her hardest to finish and put out her book, which was supposed to look back at her life and tell how those experiences made her who she is. After she attempts to write her book at the mall, she gets lost in her thoughts and inadvertently starts writing a story called “Ivy Tran, Food Court Detective.”

After she shows it to her boyfriend while still insisting that her work needed to be more serious, Guy secretly submits the book to Princess Carolyn. Surprisingly, the book was a huge success and Diane goes on to complete it, even having plans to write a sequel.

1 She Said Goodbye to Bojack

In episode 1, BoJack properly meets Diane for what he believes to be the first time since they both have been important people in each other’s lives. They have oftentimes found themselves dependant on each other in a way that wasn’t entirely healthy for either of them.

The very last scene of the series sees the two of them sitting on a roof when Diane lets BoJack know that it’ll be the last time they ever speak to each other while they look up at the night sky. It’s a bittersweet moment that brings the show and more importantly, their dynamic, full circle.
