Netflix’s BoJack Horseman is a tragicomedy featuring all kinds of people and anthropomorphic animals, set in the exciting and superficial Hollywoo. Thanks to its numerous running gags, it’s a highly entertaining watch, but its value lies in outstanding writing. There’s no topic that BoJack Horseman shied away from: mental health, politics, social justice, and the list goes on. Its main characters all had a poignant arc, beginning with the first line they spoke until the very last.

BoJack Horseman‘s five main characters were all introduced in the pilot episode. As seasons came and went, the show also featured other important individuals from BoJack’s life, such as his family members, coworkers, and romantic interests. The final episode ended with BoJack having a little dialogue with the main characters. Their last lines poignantly reflect just how far they had come.

10 Herb Kazzaz

– “Hey, let me buy you a drink.” – “Oh, BoJack, no, there is no other side.”

BoJack’s former best friend spoke his first line in a flashback. After an unsuccessful stand-up gig, Herb offered to buy BoJack a drink, but the struggling comedian rejected him and told him to go die of cancer, foreshadowing his fate.

Herb’s last line was one of the most heart-wrenching in “The View From Halfway Down.” He told his frightened friend BoJack that after death comes nothing.

9 Beatrice Horseman

– “Here’s your omelette.” – This was gonna happen to you one of these days.”

Beatrice is first introduced in a flashback of BoJack’s birthday in which she is serving Butterscotch an omelette. It was clear from the start that these two had one of the worst romances on the show. After the initial infatuation, these two started resenting each other soon after BoJack was born.

Beatrice spoke her last line in “The View From Halfway Down,” telling BoJack that he would have died sooner or later. Beatrice was rarely right about things, but she did hit the nail on the head with her last line. BoJack was off the deep end for way too long, and it’s a miracle he actually got out of it alive.

8 Hollyhock

 – “Calm down, I’m not going to hurt you.” – “Thanks.”

Hollyhock joined the main characters in season 4 and instantly became one of the show’s most likable characters. In her first scene, she approaches Todd, looking for BoJack.

She left the show halfway through the last season. Unfortunately, finding her biological family didn’t bring her much joy. She asked BoJack to give her space. Little did he know that she actually decided to cut ties with him. Thanking BoJack for giving her space wasn’t the last time her voice was heard, though. In “The Horny Unicorn,” her answering machine goes: “Leave a message, if you’re a hundred.”

7 Judah Mannowdog

– “I put everything bill-related in one folder.” – “I love you, Princess Carolyn.”

Judah, the best assistant anyone could ask for, started working for PC in the beginning of season 3. He was everything she could ask for, which is something that his first line beautifully illustrates. The man was the embodiment of organization and competence.

His last line came as a bit of a surprise since he isn’t the type to express emotions in everyday life. Instead, he sang a song to PC, professing his love to him. And then, they lived happily ever after.

6 Sarah Lynn

– “Mondays.” – “Don’t stop dancing …”

BoJack Horseman opens with Sarah Lynn and BoJack doing a live Horsin’ Around show. Her line is the first in the entire series. The show addressed several controversial topics through her character: the pitfalls of fame, the pressure child actors feel, and substance abuse.

She died in “That’s Too Much, Man,” an episode with one of the saddest episode endings. She was gone from the show after that but came back in “The View From Halfway Down” for her swan song. “Don’t stop dancing,” she sang, echoing the words BoJack told her when she was just a kid.

5 Todd Chavez

– “Why so gloomy, roomie?” – “It was nice while it lasted, right?”

Todd Chavez started out as BoJack’s roommate. His parents kicked him out and he had no place to go, but by the end of the series, he lived on his own with his girlfriend.

The very last episode of the show is named after Todd’s last line. It perfectly summed up the fan’s feelings about the show ending. It truly was nice while it lasted.

4 Mr. Peanutbutter

– “Mr. Peanutbutter and BoJack Horseman in the same room. What is this, a crossover episode?” – “I’m here for you buddy, no matter what. Unless I see my good friend Erica and get distracted by some noteworthy aspect of her character or presentation, but, BoJack, what are the odds that would …”

Mr. Peanutbutter, the dog behind some of the show’s most iconic catchphrases and running gags, was equally excited in both his first as well as his last scene.

BoJack didn’t think much of his canine friend, but Mr. Peanutbutter always stood by his side. Unless he saw Erica, that is.

3 Princess Carolyn

 – “BoJack, we need to talk.” – “I can recommend some excellent people.”

Princess Carolyn joined the show by telling BoJack that they need to talk and proceeded to break up with him. It was hard to watch, especially since BoJack didn’t even realize they were dating in the first place.

Throughout the show, PC stuck her neck out for him over and over again, enabling his irresponsible behavior. Her last line reflects just how much she had grown as a character. Instead of offering to help BoJack, she told him she can recommend some excellent people to help him get back on track.

2 Diane Nguyen

– “Hey, BoJack, right?” – “But it’s a nice night, huh?”

Diane was thrilled to meet BoJack in the first episode. They had quite a few things in common. They were both introverts, highly intelligent, equally cynical, and empty inside. After a lot of ups and downs, Diane decided to cut BoJack out of her life.

Their roof scene is the last one they shared – both on-screen as well as off-screen. From what Diane had said, it was clear that they will probably never see each other again. She lightened the mood by saying: “But it’s a nice night, huh?”

1 BoJack Horseman

– “Well, good morning to you too.” – “This is nice.”

As mentioned above, BoJack’s first line came right after Sarah Lynn’s. He was performing as the horse from Horsin’ Around. It was clear right away that he is nothing like the wholesome horse in real life.

BoJack’s last line was the last one in the show. “This is nice,” he told Diane as they gazed at the stars. He saw beauty in something as simple as sharing a moment with a friend, which set an optimistic tone as the credits started rolling for the very last time.
