Netflix’s tragicomic animated series BoJack Horseman recently wrapped up its sixth and final season (which was released in two parts) with a fitting conclusion for each major character. The series’ ending provided just enough closure to satisfy fans, but not so much that it ceased to be emotionally resonant and realistic.

The great thing about this show has always been its ability to project the best and worst things about human nature onto a talking horse. The final season brought some episodes that were good, some that were great, and even a couple that were transcendent. So, we’ve ranked all the episodes in the final season of BoJack Horseman.

16 Sunk Cost And All That

Max and Paige are two of BoJack Horseman’s most irritating characters, so “Sunk Cost and All That” is hurt by the focus on them.

The subplot involving Pickles and Joey Pogo was one of the season’s least interesting storylines, and it takes center stage here. Still, BoJack trying to figure out which of his past indiscretions is about to leak was fun.

15 The Horny Unicorn

After the Sarah Lynn story breaks, “The Horny Unicorn” explores the everyday life of a disgraced public figure. BoJack’s solution is to befriend another disgraced public figure and start working on a new movie.

14 The Face Of Depression

After leaving rehab, BoJack travels all over America to reconnect with the people he loves, particularly Diane.

Meanwhile, Mr. Peanutbutter unwittingly becomes the national representative of depression, despite being the most carefree, happy-go-lucky guy in the world.

13 The Kidney Stays In The Picture

It’s not often that we get to see Diane team up with Todd, and it’s always a treat when they do share a storyline. That’s what makes “The Kidney Stays in the Picture” so much fun, as they try to steal a kidney for Todd’s estranged mom.

12 A Little Uneven, Is All

BoJack and Diane face parallel challenges in “A Little Uneven, Is All.” The former is told he needs to leave rehab, while the latter tackles writer’s block.

11 Feel-Good Story

“Feel-Good Story” is a terrific meditation on modern journalism. Diane wants to uncover corporate evil, but Girl Croosh wants her to create some feel-good content.

Diane’s discussions with her cameraman Guy use real commentary as a backdrop to them falling in love.

10 A Quick One, While He’s Away

The midseason finale is most memorable for its chilling final moments. Hollyhock goes to a party in New York and meets a guy who tells her a story about a celebrity who got his friend drunk at prom.

Hollyhock is none the wiser, but we know who he’s talking about. This episode spells bad times for BoJack.

9 The New Client

Princess Carolyn’s desperate quest to balance her professional life with her parenting of Ruthie — ironically trying to fit in a photo shoot to celebrate working mothers in the industry — is brilliantly depicted in this episode.

Mr. Peanutbutter’s B-plot provides a lot of laughs as he visits BoJack in rehab, but Princess Carolyn is the undeniable M.V.P. of this episode.

8 A Horse Walks Into A Rehab

Following on from the season 5 finale, the season 6 premiere sees BoJack beginning his stint in rehab as he attempts to get sober.

Without the aid of alcohol, BoJack has nothing to block out the bad thoughts, and he reckons with Sarah Lynn’s death with more clarity than ever.

7 Angela

With BoJack agreeing to be removed from the Horsin’ Around Blu-rays and Todd trying to reconnect with his mother, “Angela” was an eventful episode.

It was the last regular episode before the roller coaster ride of “The View From Halfway Down” and “Nice While It Lasted.”

6 Surprise!

One of Todd’s well-meaning plans that backfired horribly appeared in “Surprise!,” in which he arranged a surprise wedding for Pickles and Mr. Peanutbutter.

All the guests have to remain hidden as Mr. Peanutbutter comes clean about his affair with Diane at the front door. The situation gives BoJack and Diane, and Todd and Princess Carolyn, a chance to connect.

5 Xerox Of A Xerox

When the Sarah Lynn story goes public, BoJack faces a terrifying reality. The life of a disgraced celebrity is not one that most people can imagine.

But there’s a relatable humanity in BoJack nailing his first interview, winning over the public, and then screwing it all up by going back for a second interview.

4 Intermediate Scene Study W/ BoJack Horseman

In the midseason premiere, BoJack starts teaching an acting class at Wesleyan University, building toward a showcase of scenes.

The episode itself is presented as a showcase of scenes, which was an interesting stylistic choice, and the story’s focus on BoJack’s struggle to establish a relationship with Hollyhock is bittersweet.

3 Good Damage

The depiction of Diane’s depression in “Good Damage” as she goes on and off her medication in her attempts to write a bitter memoir is one of the greatest portraits of depression ever put on screen.

The annoying reporters Max and Paige dragged this episode down in the B-plot, but the poignant Diane scenes more than made up for it.

2 Nice While It Lasted

The series finale was about as satisfying as fans could have hoped for. BoJack got out of prison for a weekend to attend Princess Carolyn’s wedding.

This paved the way for meaningful final moments with all his closest loved ones, culminating in a heartfelt rooftop discussion with Diane, the perfect note on which to end the series.

1 The View From Halfway Down

The penultimate episode of BoJack Horseman was when all of BoJack’s demons came home to roost. He initially thought he was having a recurring dream about a dinner party with all his dead friends and relatives, but soon came to the haunting realization that he was drowning in his pool and about to join them.

The whole episode was a dark, trippy, surreal take on accepting death, with beautiful animation and a lot of quiet, poignant moments.
