Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett

A behind-the-scenes image from The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, “Return of the Mandalorian,” seemingly confirms Pedro Pascal was not on set for the Disney+ series. The latest Star Wars series simultaneously follows the eponymous bounty hunter after the events of Return of the Jedi and after The Mandalorian season 2 as he seizes control of Jabba the Hutt’s old territories on Tatooine. When the series aired its last flashback, episode 5 hit the pause button on Boba Fett’s (Temuera Morrison) story to pick up with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).

Following the events of The Mandalorian season 2 and that memorable goodbye, Chapter 5 of The Book of Boba Fett saw Din collect a bounty, reunite with the remaining members of the Watch, forge chainmail for Grogu, wield the Darksaber, and acquire a N-1 starfighter from Peli Motto on Tatooine. In the next episode, he visited the planet where Luke Skywalker was training Foundling/Padawan Grogu before returning to Tatooine to help Boba and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) in their war with the Pykes in The Book of Boba Fett finale. As many may have guessed, while Pascal voiced Din, he likely wasn’t on set for these episodes.

Child actor Arden Briar Voyles, who played the Rodian Child Din encounters on the transport shuttle in episode 5, recently took to Facebook to share BTS photos from The Book of Boba Fett. The images show her in costume alongside director Bryce Dallas Howard and a helmeted and helmet-less Brandon Wayne, the grandson of none other than John Wayne (fitting for a Western). Wayne served as Pascal’s double during The Mandalorian season 1 and some of season 2. Check out Voyles’ images below:

The fact that Pascal isn’t in any of Voyles’ photos seems to confirm he was, at the very least, unavailable for the shuttle scene in episode 5. Considering Din never took off his helmet in The Book of Boba Fett, it’s reasonable to assume Pascal recorded his lines at Skywalker Sound so Disney/Lucasfilm could put his voice into the series. Last year, Pascal was cast as Joel Miller in HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, which he’s been busy filming in Canada and will presumably release later this year.

Filming for The Mandalorian season 3 reportedly began late last year without Pascal on set. In The Book of Boba Fett finale, Din and Grogu reunited, with the latter choosing his surrogate father over training to be a Jedi under Luke Skywalker. The pair left Tatooine and are likely headed to Mandalore, where Din hopes to redeem himself for removing his helmet and/or lead his people with the Darksaber. As Din strays further away from the dogmatic ways of the Watch, he may start to feel more comfortable taking his helmet off. However, until Pascal’s schedule frees up, it’s safe to assume audiences will be seeing very little of the Mandalorian’s face when his series returns later this year.
