The Rotten Tomatoes score for the finale of The Book of Boba Fett is the lowest rating any episode of the show has gotten. The Book of Boba Fett, which is the second Star Wars series to launch on Disney+ after The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2, premiered on the service on December 29, 2021. The series stars Temuera Morrison as iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett, Ming-Na Wen as his right-hand woman Fennec Shand, Jennifer Beals as Twi’lek bar owner Garsa Fwip, Matt Berry as the helpful droid 8D8, and David Pasquesi as the Mos Espa mayor’s majordomo.

The series began with a nested flashback structure simultaneously following Boba and Fennec’s attempts to take over Jabba the Hutt’s former territory and the events immediately following the bounty hunter’s escape from the Sarlacc pit from Return of the Jedi. The seven-episode season made an abrupt shift after the timelines converged in episode 4, sidelining Boba Fett for two full episodes to follow the story of Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian and his young charge Grogu, who was training to be a Jedi under Luke Skywalker. Boba Fett didn’t appear in a single frame of episode 5 and had a 20-second, non-speaking appearance in episode 6, which frustrated many fans. The finale finally united both threads of the series, but it may have been too late to satisfy those frustrations.

The critical aggregation service Rotten Tomatoes has recently added episode-by-episode scores to its television section, and as of today, the rating for The Book of Boba Fett episode 7 has been updated. The episode now has a rating of 50% across 18 critics’ ratings. Previously, only episode 3 “The Streets of Mos Espa” received a rotten rating at 59%, making this the most disliked episode of the series across the board. The consensus on the site reads, “In the Name of Honor completes the frustrating trend of being less compelling when it focuses on Boba Fett, but this final shootout does a serviceable job of setting up more interesting adventures in the Star Wars universe.

The Rotten Tomatoes scores for the previous episodes reflect that consensus overall. Episodes 1 and 2 started off strong with scores of 82% and 90%, respectively, as the show settled into its flashback-laden early structure. After episode 3’s poor reception, the show even bounced back to 82% before launching into the world of The Mandalorian. The episodes that follow the tale of Din Djarin and Grogu were even more warmly received, earning 100% and 89%, though the consensus descriptions on both express trepidation about the sidelining of Boba Fett, which wasn’t fully reversed in this finale episode.

The Book of Boba Fett finale’s score would seem to reflect viewers’ overall qualms with how the series has told its story, rather than the episode itself. The action-packed finale has its share of delightful fan service, including moments like Boba Fett finally riding the Rancor and a climactic battle with Cad Bane. However, its failure to justify abandoning its story thread to spend two full episodes away from the main characters has clearly rankled, and critics have not been quick to forgive a conclusion that doesn’t do much to justify why the story had been told in this particular manner in the first place.
