The release date for Book of Travels, the self-proclaimed “tiny multiplayer online role-playing game,” has been postponed again following feedback from closed beta testers. Book of Travels is different from other multiplayer games in the sense that the multiplayer aspect is actually quite scarce. Players will rarely see others on their journey and on top of that, can only communicate through symbols that are unlocked through exploration, leading to a completely different mindset for approaching and interacting with others.

Originally set to release last October, the developer had to postpone the game to this year to work on it further, giving a new release date of August 9. However, the release date was then changed again to August 30, making players wait just a few more weeks for the early access launch on Steam. While fans speculated that the new release date was a sure thing, the developer has come out with yet another update pertaining to the game’s release, taking its followers by surprise yet again.

After gathering feedback from the game’s recent closed beta, the studio Might and Delight has announced the decision to postpone Book of Travels‘ release for the fourth time in an update on Steam, pushing it to a future date that’s yet to be determined. This decision comes a month after the new trailer for Book of Travels was released to prepare fans for the August 9 release date.

“We want to be able to deliver an Early Access game that we can stand by. But believe us when we say that we don’t make this call easily, and we understand that this will disappoint anyone who couldn’t wait to jump into the game this summer. At the same time we also believe that we owe it to the game, to ourselves and – more importantly – to you to make sure that Book of Travels meets our standards. Therefore we won’t give you a new release date today. Instead, we’ll nail that down when we are in a position of confidence that we can actually hit the new deadline.”

Book of Travels has already made a name for itself in the industry, but not for its twist on the multiplayer RPG genre. The title has become infamous over the past year, with more news spreading about the delays than about the game’s premise itself. The developer’s update comes as a disappointment for the game’s fans, but comments on the announcement widely agree that a little more of a wait is much more preferable to a faster release for a game that isn’t ready.

This acceptance from fans is possibly linked to a recent trend in the gaming industry wherein many games, most often those from the biggest developers and publishers in the industry, have been releasing in a practically unfinished and messy state, with a couple of glaring examples being the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and, even more recently, Square Enix’s looter-shooter Outriders, which was unplayable for many of its users for several days upon release. With such a unique take on multiplayer reminiscent of the massive success that was Playstation’s must-play game Journey, many players are excited to finally be able to play this ambitious RPG for themselves and don’t want the experience to be soured by the many problems that arise from a rushed development. The developers have stated that a new release date won’t be given until they’re confident that Book of Travels is ready, which gives fans hope that this last push from Might and Delight won’t end in another delay.
