One of the most successful and critically acclaimed video game franchises ever, Borderlands has been an acclaimed seventh and eighth-gen looter-shooter series. The art style alone is reason enough for gamers to keep coming back to the series after over a decade’s worth of sequels and spin-offs. Despite the iconic visuals, the gameplay is also fantastic and only adds to the amazing story and world-building the games have established.

Despite the success of the launch versions of the games, tons of downloadable content has been released over the years, as well. Some of these add hours upon hours of amazing gameplay to the franchise, whereas others have unfortunately fallen a little short.

15 The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned

The first major DLC to be released for the game is by no means bad, but it isn’t quite up to the quality of its successors. Adding more to the dark and grittiness of the first game, the DLC sees players tasked with protecting the remaining survivors of Jakobs Cove alive as a zombie outbreak caused by Dr.Ned wrecks havoc in the area. The DLC is a decent size adding multiple missions and enemies to the game and isn’t a chore to complete, but when the competition is this tough, it’s not quite up to the quality of some of the others.

14 Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot

Complete with the Mad Max reference that players have come to expect from the game, Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot is a little unique amongst the Borderland DLCs. Rather than add numerous missions and plotlines, the DLC simply adds multiple arenas in which players can compete in a new game mode against various enemies in a gladiator-type fashion.

By no means a waste of time to play, those more interested in the game’s plotlines might want to steer clear of this DLC, but the gameplay itself is still enjoyable enough.

13 Directors’ Cut

Nearly the opposite of Underdome Riot, the Director’s Cut adds a ton of new story elements and new cut scenes to Borderlands 3. The most recent DLC from the franchise had mixed reviews, as many players reported that it was quite short, only requiring a few hours of gameplay to complete in its entirety. However, hardcore fans of the game should enjoy the new story elements it adds which help enrich an already dense and colorful plot for the game.

12 Moxxi’s Heist Of The Handsome Jackpot

Adding a ton of new loot and a new location, Moxxi’s Heist offers some awesome gameplay in one of the game’s coolest locations. With a plan to rob Handsome Jack’s fortune, things quickly go awry for Moxxi and the Vault Hunters as they run into an army of out-of-control Loader Bots. With the plan now thrown out the window, players must navigate the death trap of a casino in order to claim their fortune.

11 Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution

One of the DLCs that helped take the first Borderlands game to another level still holds up as one of the better add-ons for the game. Doubling down on the game’s unique sense of humor and overall off-beat style, the New Robot Revolution adds a tone of fun new stuff for players to mess around with. The add-on also adds one of the funniest antagonists in the game as players attempt to take down some rather entertaining enemies.

10 Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty

Introducing one of the coolest characters in the Borderlands universe, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty is one of the more interesting DLCs for Borderlands 2. Treasure hunts, a mysterious compass, and a backstabbing-hook-handed pirate all add to the unique feel of the DLC. The add-on also introduces tons of new locations and over a dozen missions to the game, allowing for hours of gameplay to go along with the launch version of the game.

9 Guns, Love, And Tentacles

Another DLC from the most recent iteration of the game, Guns, Love, and Tentacles provides players with a fun story about a wedding gone totally wrong. Players must help save the wedding from a cult that worships a giant dead monster above the wedding venue. With aesthetics that are clearly influenced by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, this is one of the most visually stunning DLCs in the franchise so far.

8 The Secret Armory of General Knoxx

The 3rd DLC for the first Borderlands game was one that helped define the franchise going forward. Doubling down on the silly dialogue, the entire storyline will have players chuckling to themselves as they tried to take down Crawmerax the Invincible, a giant worm-crab hybrid creature.

Crawmerax is also the first-raid boss in the game, an element that developers would continue to incorporate into later installments of the series.

7 Bounty of Blood

With a setting, plot, and aesthetic that mimics classic western movies, Bounty of Blood is another expansion that excels in the story and world-building department just as much as the actual gameplay added.

The story follows as the Vault Hunter must help to defend the small town of Vestige from a group of outlaws that want to take the old technology leftover from a corporation that used to conduct experiments on the planet. The DLC also adds the Jetbeast vehicle, adding even more hours of fun to the Old West-style missions in the add-on.

6 Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt

Danger! Excitement! Mustaches! The third campaign DLC for Borderlands 2 wastes no time letting players know exactly what it is about. With wacky new characters and an often creepy jungle setting, the DLC is one of the most memorable in the game.

Players must track down and kill exotic creatures in the new landscape with the assistance of the eccentric Sir Hammerlock. With plenty of new enemies to take down, as well as the addition of a new vehicle, the Big Game Hunt is one of the most popular amongst fans of the series for good reason.

5 Commander Lilith And The Fight For The Sanctuary

What feels like one of the more high-stakes DLC added to the game The Fight For the Sanctuary provides both memorable gameplay and characters, as well as a plotline that those who have played the game before will be fully invested in.

After Sanctuary is overtaken by Colonel Hector, the Vault Hunters must track him down and stop him before he can do irreversible damage to Pandora. The DLC also adds a new rarity level that is above any of the previous levels already in the game, allowing for some seriously powerful gear.

4 Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck

Borderlands 3 has tons of awesome downloadable content, and the Fantastic Fustercluck is no different, offering up the craziness you would expect from the series and then a little extra just for fun.

The DLC requires players to go inside the mind of Krieg to help Patricia Tannis, who has been studying the mind of the psychos on Pandora. The missions are loads of fun and provide more time with one of the coolest characters in the game.

3 Claptastic Voyage

Surprisingly not the first DLC that requires the Vault Hunters to enter another character’s mind to search for something, The Claptastic Voyage introduces lots of new elements to Borderlands: The Prequel.

With everything players want out of Borderlands game—comedy, amazing visuals, and a unique storyline—Claptastic Voyage is one of the best DLCs the game has put out.

2 Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep

It may seem like a medieval and fantasy-themed DLC would clash with the feel of the core game, but it actually works just as well as the other theme-heavy DLCs and arguably even better.

What feels like one of the largest DLCs in terms of overall content is also the best for many players. Filled with references to fantasy video games and movies, a gorgeous blue and purple color palette, and one of the most likable characters in Tina, it’s a DLC to remember.

1 Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage

Easily the best DLC in Borderlands 2 and often considered the best DLC the franchise has ever put out, the Campaign of Carnage is just about perfect.

With some of the best character development in the franchise so far, the add-on doesn’t sacrifice any of the jokes and weirdness that makes the series so great. Besides that, the add-on also adds one of the wildest game modes in the series in the form of an awesome arena mode in the Badass Crater of Badassitude.
