BOTW: Link Can Earn Double Spirit Orbs With Memory Storage Glitch

A newly discovered glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild allows players to exploit the balance of the game by duplicating items such as spirit orbs and korok seeds. Obtaining resources across Hyrule to get stronger is a core component of Breath of the Wild, but this bug can throw that delicate balance out of whack.

There are two things that Link can upgrade with spirit orbs in Breath of the Wild: hearts and stamina. Both sources are vital tools for Link to navigate the giant world of Hyrule. Climbing cliffs and beating up baddies are what make up most of the gameplay of Breath of the Wild. The more hearts you obtain, the better Link’s odds of survival against the stronger monsters. The more stamina, the more Link will be able to explore the world, which grants access to more areas with monsters and more treasure to uncover. Spirit orbs are obtained throughout the many shrines scattered across Hyrule, and while there are normally 124 obtainable orbs to upgrade Link’s health and stamina, this new glitch can make that number grow infinitely.

Gaming Reinvented has posted detailed instructions for how to pull off this glitch. First, this glitch requires using the memory storage glitch, which is a tactic used for speedrunning the game. It involves using aspects such as the travel medallion, a Hyrule compendium entry, and at least one memory. Players need to obtain a spirit orb from a shrine, then load the file again and transport to Eventide Island. Then giving up on the challenge causes the spirit orb to appear back in their inventory with the shrine not being completed. This can be done an infinite number of times, and not just with spirit orbs. This applies to any item acquired during a cutscene, which includes korok seeds, armors, materials, and so much more.

Due to the game’s open world, Breath of the Wild’s speedrunning community is very active in finding many ways to break the game. The memory storage bug allows players to obtain the bow of light and skip the great plateau, but this requires completing the game at least once. Even outside of glitches, there are many tricks speedrunners have used to navigate the world of Hyrule in style. Most recently, a speedrunner took out a walking guardian that was over a kilometer away.

Despite Breath of the Wild being three years old, new glitches and speedrunning techniques continue to be discovered within the community, and chances are this won’t be the last. There have already been glitches that have broken the boundaries of the game, and with this bug throwing any sort of difficulty balance out the window, it’s likely players will find glitches to speed through the game even faster. It’s probable that even when the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases in the distant future. players will keep coming back to the first game to discover something new within it.
