A leisurely bout of rock throwing led to one Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player discovering that enemies in Master Mode are always ready to attack unprompted. BOTW’s Master Mode joined the experience in June 2017 with the advent of the The Master Trials DLC. The first DLC pack for the open-world adventure, The Master Trials additionally unlocked access to content such as Hero’s Path Mode, Trial of the Sword, and Phantom Equipment.

Master Mode, in particular, increased the base game’s difficulty, culminating in enemies – bosses included – receiving a one-level boost. Foes in Master Mode prove even more formidable thanks to their enhanced ability to detect Link. They also recover lost health slowly over time and are known to defeat Link in a single hit from time to time. Suffice it to say, players should avoid dropping their guard while venturing across this version of BOTW. One user recently learned as much the hard way.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While exploring the open world of Breath of the Wild, Reddit user Knoxex took a small break to throw a few rocks off the side of a cliff. They did this in Master Mode, a transgression that one nearby enemy clearly believed warranted punishment of some kind. Thus, while not paying attention to Master Mode’s far more aggressive creatures, Knoxex soon found themselves on the receiving end of a fiery blow from off-screen that killed Link instantaneously. See where the player went wrong in the following gameplay clip:

There’s a lesson to be learned here, quite a few actually, chief among them being that players should always pay attention to their surroundings. And that seems to hold doubly true in Master Mode. Evidently, the enemies in this mode exercise ruthlessness and proudly so.

The game’s fifth anniversary is only a few months away, yet players continue to explore and stumble across new BOTW secrets. Fortunately, another world will open for exploration sometime next year when Nintendo rolls out the eagerly-anticipated Breath of the Wild 2, which currently lacks a firm due date. The publisher last showcased the sequel during its E3 2021 presentation, complete with a look at previously unseen landmasses and a crumbling Hyrule Castle.
