Legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto has thanked fans in Japan for voting The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the best game of all time. Over 50,000 Japanese players selected BOTW as the most popular video game in a recent poll, beating out the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Minecraft.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is arguably one of the biggest and most beloved games on Nintendo Switch. The 2017 title, which also released for Wii U, placed the Hero of Time in an all-new open-world, packed with secrets, mysteries, and threats. Thanks to the non-linear game design, players are able to explore Hyrule at their own pace, unlocking everything the lands have to offer in almost any order they choose. Even today, fans are still discovering new tips and tricks for creative combat, or glitches and exploits to change what’s typically allowed in a normal playthrough. With so many secrets to find in BOTW, the game continues to surprise and delight even veteran players.

Thanking fans via the official Nintendo Japanese Twitter account and translated by Cheesemeister3K (via ZeldaUniverse), Shigeru Miyamoto showed his appreciation for fans not just of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but all Nintendo games. Recognizing the many Nintendo titles that appeared on the final list for the TV Asahi Video Game General Election, Miyamoto noted how the show became a “chance to think back to all the scenes of game development over nearly 40 years.” He added: “I will keep on making games to bring new experiences to all.“

Shigeru Miyamoto is not only one of the biggest names in Nintendo’s history, but also the history of game development overall. His illustrious career includes the creation of Mario, Nintendo’s mascot and star of countless console hits, as well as the creation and design of other top franchises including The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, and more.
