An observant The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player has discovered that the game’s Astral Observatory boss room is adorned with Hyrule landmarks. The most recent release in Nintendo’s long-running Legend of Zelda fantasy series, Breath of the Wild launched in 2017 and was met with critical acclaim. The game’s open-world level design, which allows players to explore freely and complete objectives in any number of ways, has been breathed new life into the decades-old franchise.

The open-world design of Breath of the Wild has been praised both for its size and amount of detail. Breath of the Wild‘s weather system, which generates random and immersive weather patterns which directly affect gameplay, was recently celebrated through a time-lapse video. The video, created by Reddit user Fair_Industry7328, shows off the variety of looks that can be randomly generated by the game world. Subsequent in-game days may look wildly different from each other due to cloud cover, fog, or violent storms. Fans also look to the smaller details included in Breath of the Wild which helps make the world of Hyrule even more immersive.

Breath of the Wild player and Reddit user Chicken_Vomit recently posted a video showing off an interesting Easter egg in Calamity Ganon’s boss room. Entering the Astral Observatory using a glitch so that Ganon does not interrupt, Chicken_Vomit is able to examine murals that cover the walls of the boss arena. Each of these murals depicts a Hyrule landmark, and using the game’s map reveals that each of these murals is actually facing the direction of the in-game landmark.

After the massive success of Breath of the Wild, series fans are filled with anticipation for the game’s inevitable sequel. Unfortunately, little information is currently available about Breath of the Wild 2, and recently-released documents suggest that rival video game company Microsoft expected the Breath of the Wild sequel to release back in 2020. Documents released as part of the lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games reveal that Microsoft had strategically placed its video game releases in order to avoid the release of the highly-anticipated BOTW2.

Breath of the Wild‘s open-world was massively successful due to its perfect balance between size and immersion. The game’s world is quite large, but it is also filled with intricate details that make it both believable and fascinating. Chicken_Vomit’s discovery of the Astral Observatory murals is just one more piece of BOTW‘s masterful world-building.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
