Bowser’s Fury Has Largest Open Space In A 3D Mario Game, But It’s Very Short

According to previews for the Super Mario 3D World Switch port, the standalone Bowser’s Fury adventure offers the largest open space in a 3D Super Mario title, but it only takes a handful of hours to complete. Nintendo claims that Bowser’s Fury offers a full-fledged experience that follows a separate storyline than Super Mario 3D World, and it seems it has managed to meet these expectations while at the same time cramming them into a tiny package.

Super Mario 3D World was originally released on the Wii U in 2013 and is one of the few remaining first-party titles that have yet to be ported over to the Nintendo Switch. Along with the Switch port, Nintendo announced a brand new adventure in the form of Bowser’s Fury. This adventure follows Mario as he teams up with Bowser Jr. to take on Fury Bowser who terrorizes the land of Lake Lapcat. Bowser’s Fury plays like a mixture of Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D World, but it isn’t nearly as long as either title.

According to a preview for Bowser’s Fury from GamesBeat, Bowser’s Fury is a “meaty 3D Mario adventure” that offers the largest open area Mario has yet to explore. Unlike traditional 3D Mario titles such as Odyssey or Galaxy, players won’t have to explore a hub-world or level select screen to get to the next open area. That’s because Bowser’s Fury takes place in a single massive area consisting of large island groups scattered around Lake Lapcat. Mario can seamlessly traverse Lake Lapcat’s various subsections without the hassle of loading screen or cutscenes making it the largest 3D Mario level to date.

However, GameBeat describes it simply as “one of the kingdoms from Super Mario Odyssey, just bigger.” While Bowser’s Fury seems to offer a complete adventure, it only lasts a few hours. In a now-removed section of GamesBeat’s article, the preview claimed that Bowser’s Fury takes roughly three hours to beat, and six hours to 100%. This doesn’t make Bowser’s Fury the shortest Mario title in existence, but it is very short in comparison to more recent Mario games. For instance, Mario Odyssey’s main story takes around 12 hours to beat, and Super Mario 3D World’s storyline takes 10 hours.

Although Bowser’s Fury has a short runtime, it is bound to be another great 3D Mario experience. Sure, players may not get hundreds of hours out of it, but they are still getting two games for the price of one. If anything, Super Mario 3D World is a fantastic experience on its own, and Bowser’s Fury is the cherry on top.
