Back in September of last year, Nintendo announced there would be a re-release of the hit Wii U title Super Mario 3D World for the Switch, and it includes a brand new expansion called Bowser’s Fury. The whole game is said to have a handful of gameplay adjustments, but up until now there was no indication of what Bowser’s Fury might actually be. With the release of the Bowser’s Fury trailer, the expansion’s gameplay makes it look like a DLC for Super Mario Odyssey rather than 3D World.

A lot of big Nintendo titles released on the Switch have had the luxury of being supported with post-release content. Breath of the Wild had two expansions, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to receive new fighters, and Pokémon Sword and Shield have grown the Pokédex with DLC. For some reason, Super Mario Odyssey never got the same treatment. Fans of Odyssey are hoping this is because a sequel is on the way, but there has been no word from Nintendo yet if that is indeed the plan.

Super Mario 3D World, which originally came out in 2013, never had any sort of expansion. With the Switch port releasing on February 12th, Bowser’s Fury promises new content for new and old fans alike. The new trailer for Bowser’s Fury reveals something a bit odd though: it doesn’t really look like a level that belongs in 3D World. The gameplay of 3D World is a sort of mash-up between the side-scrolling, 2D Mario games and the 3D platformers like Odyssey. Each level has a timer and the iconic level-ending flagpole, but there is the added z-axis of the 3D games, allowing players to freely explore the stage.

Super Mario Odyssey DLC Would Look Like Bowser’s Fury

The trailer for Bowser’s Fury shows a stage reminiscent of the kingdoms Mario and Cappy travel to in Odyssey. Mario is shown freely traveling around a large, open map, not the corridor-like levels of 3D World. Maybe Nintendo felt the need to justify another $60 price tag on 3D World by adding some extra content, but it’s strange that it seems to be such a departure in gameplay from the base game. From what players can see in the game’s trailer, Bowser’s Fury looks like it would fit right in as an expansion for Odyssey, minus the exclusion of beloved hat sidekick Cappy.

Regardless of the gameplay likeness to OdysseySuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury looks as though it will be delivering more quality Mario platforming. The Switch port was first announced during the year of Mario’s 35th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate the eponymous hero than another – and this time gargantuan – showdown with Bowser?
