Boyfriend Dungeon Lets You Date Anyone, Regardless Of Gender

Boyfriend Dungeon is a recently released dungeon crawler dating simulation game that allows players to romance their various weapons. From its title, it seems like the game would be quite heteronormative, designed for adventurous women who want a boyfriend, but after diving into the game’s narrative, it’s clear that Boyfriend Dungeon is an LGBTQ+ friendly title, allowing players to romance almost any character encountered.

In Boyfriend Dungeon, players inhabit a customizable character who goes to stay with their cousin in Verona Beach, a town where it’s perfectly normal for sentient weapons to turn into humans. Upon arriving, players realize something is amiss in the beachside town with the appearance of mysterious dungeons (shortened to “Dunj” in the game) and several weapons showing up injured. As they delve into a quest for the truth, Boyfriend Dungeon players can increase their relationship status with desired weapons by using them to fight in the Dunjs as well as go on dates in town.

Sentient weapons in Boyfriend Dungeon include Isaac, an estoc and financier; Valeria, a dagger and painter; Sunder, a talwar and club owner; Seven, a lasersaber and K-pop idol; Sawyer, a glaive and student; and Rowan, a scythe and mystic. Eric, Boyfriend Dungeon’s most notorious character, is the only human character players can choose to date, and there is a cat named Pocket who can transform into brass knuckles, the only non-romanceable character in the game. Each character has a unique personality, replete with likes and dislikes, and will automatically show interest in dating the player character.

How Boyfriend Dungeon Is LGBTQ+ Inclusive

From the start, character creation in Boyfriend Dungeon allows players to customize their character by choosing their gender via pronoun selection. While this in and of itself isn’t abnormal for games, Boyfriend Dungeon includes a they/them option, creating space for non-binary players from the get-go. Additionally, two of the characters in the game, Sawyer and Rowan, identify as non-binary.

Whatever pronouns the player chooses, they are able to date whatever character they choose. As Boyfriend Dungeon players get to know the residents of Verona Beach, they’ll start to uncover more diversity in their backstories; for example, Valeria, the only dateable female in Boyfriend Dungeon, is pansexual and used to be in a polyamorous relationship. Even more refreshing is the complete lack of commentary about sexual orientation in the narrative – regardless of who the Boyfriend Dungeon player chooses to romance, nothing in the story will change nor will it be commented on, cementing the world’s inclusivity.
