Famed fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, known for Mistborn and Stormlight Archive, recently announced that he’s spent years working on a game, though it bears no connection to any of his personal works. Even those unfamiliar with Sanderson as a novelist have likely run across his influence in games. Earlier this year, in fact, Mistborn character Kelsier appeared in a Fortnite crossover. The content added a Kelsier Outfit, Volcanic Glass Daggers Pickaxe, and a Kelsier-themed Loading Screen.

Brandon Sanderson partnered with Epic Games a decade ago as well, having penned the Infinity Blade: Awakening novella for the Infinity Blade action RPG series. Furthermore, as a Magic: The Gathering fan, the Mistborn author contributed to the story by writing Children of the Nameless, a novel that Wizards of the Coast published in December 2018. (Unfortunately, this particular work in the extended universe has since been removed from free access.) The author’s minimal footprint in gaming will soon expand in size if the recent tease on his official blog is anything to go by.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In a “State of the Sanderson 2021” blog post (via Game Informer), Brandon Sanderson revealed that he’s been working on a new game for the past “several years.” Sanderson couldn’t divulge much but said he believes the masses will finally hear about the secret project sometime this year. The interactive adventure in question has no connection to any of the author’s previous works, he added. Rather, this constitutes “something knew” he helped build with a studio that, thus far, remains nameless. Sanderson further teased that while the development group is a team his readers have likely heard of, it’s “probably not the one you’re thinking about right now.”

Obviously, little to nothing is known about the project at the time of writing. And while Sanderson claims an announcement could go live sometime this year, the end of December timing suggests such news won’t hit the airwaves. Who knows, though, maybe an early 2022 reveal is on the docket?

Sanderson isn’t the first fantasy author of great renown to dip his toe in the gaming space. In February, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment will release Elden Ring, a new experience whose lore and world were crafted in collaboration with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. It sounds as though Brandon Sanderson assumed a similar role on the recently teased mystery game.
