Brandy has reunited with her Cinderella 1997 co-star, Paolo Montalban, at a recent event. The film was produced by Walt Disney Television, but rather than being an adaptation of their animated classic, it was a modernization of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical from 1957. In addition to starring Brandy as Cinderella, it featured pop legend Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, Bernadette Peters as the Wicked Stepmother, Whoopi Goldberg as the Queen, and Jason Alexander as the Prince’s valet, Lionel. Cinderella began streaming on Disney+ earlier this year.

Cinderella’s love interest in the film was Prince Christopher, played by Montalban. The Filipino-American actor also reprised that role onstage in 2005 and went on to appear on Broadway in classic shows like The King and I, another Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, and Breakfast at Tiffany‘s, in which he co-starred with Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke. In 1998, the actor was voted one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People, a list which also included Erykah Badu, perennial favorite Leonardo DiCaprio, and – unusually – U.K. prime minister Tony Blair.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Montalban met his former princess Brandy once again at the Second Stage Theater this Sunday. The theater’s annual gala celebrated Cinderella‘s executive producer, Debra Martin Chase, which occasioned their reunion. On his Instagram, Paolo Montalban shared a series of photos and clips from the evening, including a video of Chase gushing over how “lovely” both he and Brandy are. His caption highlights the producer’s tremendous accomplishments, including being “the first African-American female producer to have a deal at a major studio.” Check out the post below:

Cinderella was nominated for 7 Emmy Awards the year it came out, but throughout the decades since its release, the film has also had a lasting impact on fans across the globe. It has long been celebrated for casting a Black woman in the lead role, as well as its diverse cast, but it is also a beloved adaptation of both the Cinderella fairy tale and the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Many outlets have voted it among the top Cinderella adaptations of all time.

Brandy has long embraced her history with the project, even transforming into Cinderella in a recent TikTok video. Cinderella obviously meant a lot to Montalban as well. It’s lovely that he and Brandy were able to come together once more to celebrate the film that brought them together and the woman who helped it come to life.
